Warning: The following contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Chapter 395, "Built Upon The Joy Of Others," by Kohei Horikoshi, translated by Caleb Cook, and Lettered by John Hunt, available in English from MangaPlus.

My Hero Academia chapter 395 dropped just recently and it goes without saying that this week's chapter was expected to drop the curtains on the fight between Toga and Ochaco Uraraka. That is precisely where Horikoshi took fans, as he delivered quite an intense closing act for Toga, who ended up bidding farewell to the fans this week.

While fans also got a glimpse of the battlefield, along with some other interesting characters such as Hawks, the vast majority of the focus was on Toga and the life that she had lived up to this point. My Hero Academia chapter 395 focused on a villain doing a heroic act at the end, which was a very interesting writing decision by Horikoshi, for better or worse.

The Battlefield

The battlefield my hero academia 395

My Hero Academia chapter 395 gave fans a glimpse of the battlefield, which was previously swamped by clones of Twice. The clones crowded the entirety of the battlefield and the Heroes were significantly hindered by just the power of a single villain. Toga proved her power time and again during this war and she had single-handedly restrained the vast majority of the Heroes with her overwhelmingly powerful clones. Finally, after falling at the hands of Uraraka, Toga's clones dissipated and turned into nothing slowly. With her clones disappearing, the battlefield finally started to open up.

All the Heroes who were facing grave danger and, in some cases, even imminent death, were now saved, thanks to Ochaco Uraraka. This is an incredible character-defining moment for Uraraka, who has been largely neglected in the vast majority of the series. Being one of the main characters, she should have been at the receiving end of quite a lot of focus, however, Horikoshi chose to not progress her character further until the Final War Saga. Thankfully, fans did get to see her shine in this fight, especially over the course of the last few chapters and, for that, they are grateful, at the very least. Uraraka's character has taken a positive turn, both in terms of character writing as well as her skill as a Hero. She has now saved countless lives and fans got to see that in this chapter when Horikoshi went over the battlefield, which saw several injured Heroes finally being able to breathe a sigh of relief, all thanks to her.

Hawks Survives

My Hero Academia chapter 395 also gave fans a glimpse of Hawks. Having been severely weakened after getting his Quirk stolen, Hawks was at death's door and one of Toga's clones found him. With her knife, she had sliced him across the chest and would most certainly have killed him had Uraraka not saved the day. Thankfully, for Hawks, the clone dissipated just in time, and his life was spared. Seeing that unfold in front of his eyes, Hawks did not waste any time in mentioning to Toga that twice was a good person. Yet, he did not hesitate in killing him because as a Hero, that was his responsibility.

Because of him, Toga lost someone very precious to her and this decision was part of what pushed her this far. Sadly for Toga, these words, at this point, would mean nothing as she herself was seen close to death in the chapter. For Hawks, the war looks like it is done. He doesn't have it in him to fight anymore and he certainly cannot even make a difference even if he tried. Fans will likely not see more of him from here onwards and all attention will instead be focused on those who are still standing and continue to fight.

Toga Gives Her Blood

The vast majority of the focus of My Hero Academia chapter 395 was on Toga. Last week, fans finally saw Toga opening her heart to none other than Ochaco and this eventually led to a very heartwarming moment between the two characters as they embraced each other in the sky, expressing their feelings and reciprocating them at the same time.

This would appear to be a very positive move for My Hero Academia, however, the plot took a drastic turn this week as Toga started going over her entire life. Fans got to see her life from her perspective. Toga mentioned how her home was a sad memory for her and that is precisely why Toya helped her burn it down.

She mentioned there is no place for her in the world, which is precisely why the League of Villains is her only home. In the League of Villains, Toga had a place to belong to and they were like a family to her. In Toga's eyes, Heroes don't need justification for killing Villains, and Hawks killing Twice would just be an example of that. Yet, at the same time, it was a Hero who ended up reaching out to her and touched her soul at the end of the day. Because of that, even though Toga still adheres to her own beliefs and still considers the League of Villains to be her family, she, for the first time, was adhering to what Ochaco was saying. Toga felt loved and this love was reciprocated from her, which is precisely why she took a drastic decision at the end of the chapter that has split opinion among the fans.

Fans also got a glimpse of Ochaco in this week's chapter as she was slowly dying. Having lost as much blood as she did, it was only a matter of time before she ended up losing all consciousness and eventually losing her life. That is precisely where Toga took matters into her own hands and decided to sacrifice herself instead.

The Death Of Himiko Toga

The character of Toga appeared to be marked for death ever since the final war arc began. This chapter only confirmed the fears of many fans who absolutely adore this character because Toga looks all set to sacrifice herself for Ochaco. After drinking her blood, Toga took the form of Ochaco and she was able to manifest it because she loves her very dearly. The two do share romantic feelings for each other as well as feelings of admiration and what could have been a very intriguing plot point for the story moving forward ended up being shut down in My Hero Academia chapter 395.

To save Ochaco's life, Toga turned into her and decided to give her her own blood. Throughout the entirety of her life, Toga had only taken blood from others, those who she envied, and even those that she loved. However, now, for the very first time, Toga is using her blood to save someone else and that certainly is a beautiful touch in itself.

Toga lived her life the way she wanted and in the end, showed that even a villain can end up saving countless lives, however, at the same time, Toga has done things that she cannot be forgiven for that easily. Yet, redemption is something that her character could and should have explored. Having Toga save Ochaco and then dying is simply not an apology. A stark contrast to this would be how Horikoshi has handled Endeavor. He has been a horrible person for the vast majority of his life yet, he is continuously working to do better in what remains of his life. He cannot be forgiven for what he has done, but he can still make the world a better place moving forward.

Even when Endeavor was close to breaking down, his family kept him on this path of doing better for others and truly being a Hero from there onwards. This, overall, is a better approach for handling character redemption. Simply saving a life and then killing the character off, as has been the case with Toga, appears to be a cheap way to close a character arc. Toga is a beautiful character and she did have a lot of potential. Even if she gave Ochaco her blood, Toga could easily have survived if Horikoshi willed it. She could've had a phenomenal redemption arc and an intriguing story with Ochaco.

For what it's worth, Toga's story was beautiful to the very end and, even if she doesn't end up surviving from here onwards, fans can be glad that this character lit up My Hero Academia the way it did.
