Warning: The following contains spoilers for My Happy Marriage Episode 12, “Light in The Darkness”, now streaming on Netflix.

After such a daring rollercoaster ride, My Happy Marriage finally reached its 12th and final episode. But unlike other romance anime that came before it, this one decided to end the story with a big bang. For its last episode, My Happy Marriage decided to venture into the realm of horror/supernatural for a while.

As the story goes, Kiyoka was attacked by a bunch of Grotesqueries. Now, his consciousness is stuck in a mysterious realm where he has to fight against an endless torrent of raging Grotesqueries, while his body lay limp in real life. Miyo, who has gained a better understanding of her power, is the only one who can help Kiyoka by diving into his mind and helping him defeat the monsters. But before that, she has to face the dark side of her heart first.

A Pinch of Horror

My Happy Marriage E12 Miyo Kiyoka Bed

As you can probably imagine from the description above, this episode utilizes a lot of tropes that you would normally find in a supernatural/horror anime. Things like desperately fighting against a horde of ghouls and monsters by yourself, having to face the dark and more powerful version of yourself in order to know who you really are and obtain that true power, and of course, a maniacal old man who uses dark power to kill the protagonists. All of those things are tropes that you would find in anime like Inuyasha and Demon Slayer.

Needless to say, it’s quite surprising when My Happy Marriage suddenly turns into Demon Slayer right in the final episode. But it is certainly a wonderful surprise. Because the author still manages to weave the romance that has become the solid foundation of the series into this new element. Not only that, the action part of the story that was introduced all the way back in episode six of this series also merges incredibly well with the horror.

Who knows that a pinch of horror would work so well with a bittersweet romance story like My Happy Marriage? Watching the first few episodes, nobody would’ve thought that the story would end with Miyo and Kiyoka fighting together against a horde of flying monsters. Yet here they are and everything not only makes sense storywise, but it also brings something refreshing and unique to the audience.

The Birth of A Power Couple

My Happy Marriage E12 Miyo Figth With Kiyoka

Character development is one of My Happy Marriage’s strongest suits, especially when it comes to the main protagonists, Miyo Saimori and Kiyoka Kudou. There is a lot that can be talked about when it comes to character development that has been happening during these twelve episodes. But the one that is most relevant to talk about regarding this final episode is the fact that Miyo and Kiyoka have officially turned into a fearsome power couple.

Kiyoka has always oozed an air of power and authority since the moment he appeared on the screen. That’s why nobody is surprised when he displayed such dominance in combat, both in terms of sword fighting and magic powers. When it comes to Miyo, though, her development would mainly be related to her feelings and a change in how she sees life in general. At least that is what everybody thinks.

My Happy Marriage's newest supporting character is generating tons of buzz for all the wrong reasons.

Yet the author once again surprises us with the kind of changes that Miyo shows us in this episode. Not only is she much more open with her feelings and brave enough to go after what she wants, but she can also stand proudly beside Kiyoka in battle. She is not only somebody who will support Kiyoka through day-to-day life but also support him during an intense battle against the grotesqueries. She is no longer the meek girl who needs protection from Kiyoka. She is now a brave and powerful woman who can boldly stand on the battlefield. This is the birth of a new power couple.
