In the supernatural romance My Happy Marriage, leading lady Miyo Saimori grows up believing that she is worthless. Miyo lives a Cinderella story: she is criticized by her stepmother and step-sister, has an absent father amidst this, and escapes her home by marrying a handsome man. However, Miyo's marriage would not initially be described as a fairytale ending, for her husband, Kiyoka Kudou, is a cold man who has notoriously scared off many prospective wives.

In a world where everyone around her has special abilities, Miyo has none. As a result, she feels helpless, both in her abilities and as a person. Miyo's world turns upside down when it turns out that she had a supernatural ability all along: Dream-Sight, a gift her late mother sealed away from her.

What is Dream-Sight?

My Happy Marriage E11 Miyo Using Dream Sight

Throughout the anime, Miyo tends to have vivid and stressful dreams. It transpires that this is part of her Dream-Sight ability, which allows her to see the true world in her sleep. In her dreams, Miyo can see events in various parts of the world at any time in the past or future, manipulate dreams, and locate missing items. She can also control human minds, which is odd considering how most supernatural abilities are aimed at Grotesqueries. Miyo having such a powerful ability is due to her Usuba bloodline, in whom rare gifts like this are found.

Why is Being a Dream-Sight Medium so Important?

My Happy Marriage E12 Dark Miyo

Only females in the Usuba bloodline can be born with Dream-Sight. Given that telepathic girls and gift-users are rare to come by, someone with the precious Dream Sight feels like a very far-fetched idea. Before Miyo, a Dream-Sight Medium had not been seen in over a century.

Since Dream-Sight is such a powerful ability, great good and evil can come from it. Even if users have the purest hearts, that will not stop ill-intentioned people from exploiting them for selfish gain. These Mediums can render the most skilled soldier useless, a very dangerous premise in a war. It is fear of exploitation that Sumi Usuba, Miyo's mother, sealed this ability from her.

Miyo's Sealed Ability

My Happy Marriage E11 Sumi Usuba

In the penultimate episode of My Happy Marriage, Miyo comes to learn why Sumi disabled her Dream-Sight from her grandfather Yoshirou Usuba. Before Miyo was born, the Tsuruki Trading company, the Usuba's family business, failed to collaborate with an important business partner, which resulted in the worst business slump and debt pileup them in company history. In their lowest pitfall, a marriage proposal was made to the Usuba by the Saimori family. They said that they would pay off a significant portion of the company's crushing debt if Sumi married into their family. Yoshirou rejected their proposal many times, but the Saimoris were persistent.

Eventually, and without her father's knowledge, Sumi decided to accept their proposal. Yoshirou was furious, for not only would she be passing on the Usuba bloodline to another family but she is putting her health at risk, for it is already deteriorating. According to Sumi, the Usubas have no choice but to accept the proposal. After the wedding to Shinichi Saimori, Sumi's contact with her father was cut to the point where they became completely isolated from one another.

My Happy Marriage's newest supporting character is generating tons of buzz for all the wrong reasons.

Miyo then uses her Dream-Sight to see the past, specifically what happened on her mother's wedding day. Not only was their marriage political, but there was pressure on Sumi to bear a child for they would have powerful Usuba blood and Dream-Sight. After Sumi gave birth to a baby girl, she learned very quickly that she had Dream Sight. One day, Sumi overheard the Saimori men talking about Miyo, who at this point were unsure if or what Miyo's abilities are. They said that if they don't obtain it as quickly as possible, the Saimoris will be demoted. They claim that they worked very hard to have a vial of the Usuba bloodline, therefore if Miyo has no special powers then Shinichi needs to impregnate Sumi quickly before she passes away, which could be very soon given the state of her health.

When Sumi realizes that she is going to die soon, she concludes that signs of Miyo's abilities will show shortly. As a result, she believes that Miyo will be endlessly exploited for her gifts. As she prepares to seal away Miyo's abilities, she apologizes to her baby for the pain she will endure as she grows up. Sumi anguishes over the fact that Miyo may feel worthless and blame herself for being giftless, but for her safety, Sumi has to seal it for a while. It is for her daughter's own protection that Sumi hid Miyo's gift away, even at the cost of Miyo's upbringing.
