Devolver Digital showed up during E3 2021 with a range of surprise announcements and reveals, but that was apparently just the start of Devolver's summer plans. Monday morning, Devolver unveiled another upcoming project, coming from DeadToast Entertainment. The developers of My Friend Pedro are back with the next iteration of the franchise. Introducing My Friend Pedro: Ripe for Revenge, a free-to-play take on the popular fast-paced action game built just for mobile devices.

The premise of My Friend Pedro: Ripe for Revenge is similar to the original game. The player takes on the role of a nameless, incredibly deadly masked assassin being ordered around by their sentient floating banana friend named Pedro. "They" have kidnapped Pedro the banana's family and it's up to the player to act out Pedro's revenge. It isn't clear if My Friend Pedro: Ripe for Revenge ties into the startling revelations of the original game at all, but clearly Pedro's thirst for blood has seemingly been renewed.

Even the gameplay of My Friend Pedro appears to have been retained for its mobile game spin-off, though it has taken on clear mobile influences to keep the action moving forward at a consistent pace. Basically, it appears that My Friend Pedro: Ripe for Revenge has taken full control away from the player keep them moving forward constantly. Think of it as if My Friend Pedro was an endless runner version of the original game. In fact, there's even a motorcycle type of level that very clearly features runner gameplay.

In My Friend Pedro: Ripe for Revenge, players will move through a level assassinating a variety of enemies that stand in their way. They do this by jumping and flipping through windows and over obstacles, followed by firing their weapons as time slows down mid-air. In that respect, the game is partially a puzzle game, as perfecting movement and taking advantage of the environment is as important as aiming.

Disappointingly, what hasn't been announced is how My Friend Pedro: Ripe for Revenge will be monetized. As a free-to-play mobile game, there are a variety of ways it can bring in money, whether that be microtransactions, content gating, extra DLC content, or otherwise. And, like most free-to-play mobile games, monetization could make the difference between whether My Friend Pedro: Ripe for Revenge is worth checking out or not. Hopefully, more information will be shared soon.

For now, those interested in My Friend Pedro: Ripe for Revenge can visit the game's official website to pre-register for the game. Otherwise, its release date is just a month away. It could serve as a great precursor to the in-development My Friend Pedro television adaptation.

My Friend Pedro: Ripe for Revenge releases August 5 on iOS and Android devices.
