Rudeus' victory over Badigadi has spread to the other students, and he has now become feared by anyone not in the special students class. Rudeus continues to attend classes, spend time with his fellow classmates, and make time to help Nanahoshi with her summoning experiments. Though h experiments is simply funneling mana into the magic circles she creates, the brute force mass summoning strategy she is employing means she is taking up more of her time. The group reminisce about their days going on quests while Sol marvels at the idea of Elinalise going steady with a boyfriend. While walking through the city on his way back, Rudeus stumbles into Luke and Fitz shopping on the streets. Rudeus greets them, but Fitz is strangely guarded around him. Luke attempts to excuse him by claiming that Fitz cannot speak when he is guarding his highness, but Rudeus is doubtful. Feeling hurt that Fitz would ignore him like that, Rudeus searches for someone to talk to but can't find anyone who would listen. In the end, he decides to go to the library, where he is surprised to find Fitz acting normally. Rudeus interrogates Fitz about what happened in town, but Fitz repeats that he cannot speak when outside with the princess. Seeing Fitz's change in demeanor, Rudeus deduces that the Fitz he met in town was actually Princess Ariel, and that she was disguised as Fitz so she could wander around town unnoticed. Relieved that Fitz does not suddenly dislike him, Rudeus begins to realize that he sees Fitz as more than just a good friend and classmate.
