What Are Demon Eyes?

In simple terms, demon eyes are a class of ocular powers that confer special abilities to those who possess them. Users may either have them at birth, or gain them through deals with Kishirika Kishirisu, former empress of the Demon Continent. They have existed for a very long time in the Six-Faced World, and a few of them have been shown in the series so far. It is said that Kishirika has at least 12 such eyes in her possession, which she can cycle through at will, but the actual number has not yet been ascertained.

Like the majority of abilities in the series, demon eyes are primarily controlled by regulating the flow of mana through one's body. By directing this flow towards the eye in question, they can activate or enhance the abilities of a demon eye, and doing so helps them gain greater control of it with repeated usage. Most users of demon eyes find it extremely difficult to master them, even over the course of an entire lifetime, and as such, they usually opt to keep it covered with an eyepatch when not in use.

This practice can first be observed with Ghyslaine Dedoldia, who has the Magic Power Eye. It took Rudeus around a week of training to get the hang of using his own demon eyes, which speaks volumes of how difficult the task truly is, considering his prodigious skill in manipulating mana. Hence, it would be no stretch to imagine someone with less refined control over their mana struggling to master their demon eyes. Some individuals who are born with demon eyes may not even be aware of the fact that they possess such power until they are told to redirect mana towards their eyes.

What Abilities Can They Grant?

Among the plethora of demon eyes seen throughout the series, Magic Power Eyes are by far the most common among them. Both Kishirika Kishirisu and Ghyslaine Dedoldia possess this ability, which allows them to perceive the flow of mana through objects and individuals directly. Exuding a deep shade of green, these eyes feature a cross-like pattern consisting of four additional pupils that point towards the central pupil.

Next come Identification Eyes, which provide all known information about a certain individual, object, or topic when the eye is directed towards them. However, it only works for things that Kishirika has knowledge of, and everything else will be labeled as "unknown." Kishirika's arsenal also includes X-Ray Eyes, which permit her to see through walls or clothes, but not through dense magical barriers or living beings. Similarly, Clairvoyant Eyes are possessed by both Rudeus and Kishirika. Permitting users to see things over large distances, they change the perspective of a user's vision rather than functioning as a scope, and their power can be enhanced by redirecting mana flow towards them.

One of the series' most prominently featured abilities are the Foresight Eyes, also possessed by both Rudeus and Kishirika. This ability allows a user to peer into the near future and ascertain possible outcomes of an action or event. However, the pitfall of this eye is that it shows a variety of possible outcomes, especially if a user focuses more mana and tries to look further into the future. In this case a number of different possibilities become blurred together, which makes the task of reacting to them even more complicated. Hence, they must develop a very refined level of control over them to perceive the most plausible outcome in each scenario. The eyes themselves have a color that is quite similar to Rudeus' natural eyes, but the pupil takes on the form of a swirl.

Absorption Eyes allow users to absorb magic power, but a magician in possession of them must take care to not absorb their own power. The All-Seeing Eyes permit a user to perceive everything in the world or even locate certain people if required, and only an extremely dense level of magic power can hinder their gaze. Both these eyes have only been used by Kishirika. Alternatively, Randolph Marianne has the Absolute Void Eyes, which can create a barrier around a large area, whereas Gadalf Rangid has the Affection Eyes, which cause people to develop an infatuation for the user. Lastly, it was said that Laplace also possessed Demon Eyes of his own, which gave him the power to see traces of living beings in an area, and use them to track an individual to their most recent location.
