For a long time now, fighting game fans have talked about the idea of a "free-to-play" fighting game and how it would do incredibly well if a big one was ever made. Well, MultiVersus is that game, and it's doing incredibly well. But, not every aspect of MultiVersus is free; they've got to make their money back somehow.

And, while the monetization of this game is something that's currently being argued about in the community, people are absolutely buying into it. So, let's go over some of the most absurdly expensive cosmetics in Multiversus and why.

Disclaimer: Prices will be broken down into the in-game currency, Gleamium, which is only sold in packs of 450 ($5 USD), 1,000 ($10 USD), 2,200 ($20 USD), and 6,000 ($50 USD).

Ringout VFX: 1200 Gleamium

Multiversus - Three Samples Of Ring Out VFX, Space Kook, Bat Signal, and Dark Matter

First up are the Ringout VFX players can buy. These are the effects that pop up on screen when a character is knocked into the "Blast Zone" on any of the stage's four edges and is then KO'd. Making cosmetics for getting KO's is a pretty interesting idea, and MultiVersus already has a lot of amazing VFX players can buy, with a lot more assuredly coming in the near future.

Out of all the VFX players can buy, however, the most expensive ones are the Epic Rarity VFX which have a purple border. These are 1200 Gleamium each (AKA a 450 pack and a 1,000 pack) and include:

Character Variants: 1500-2000 Gleamium

Multiversus - Sample OF Three Variants, Hollywood Bugs, Mad Love Harley, and Luau Velma

Next up are likely the cosmetic players will care about the most, Character Skins. Each character in the Roster already has one skin at launch, and there have already been a lot more seen in official trailers, datamines, and leaks that have yet to drop in-game. Now, the most bombastic skins or "variants" are also the most expensive, and the game already technically has two Legendary skins available, the Cake Variant for Jake the Dog and the Animated Series Variant for Batman.

While the Cake Variant isn't purchasable and is instead part of the Premium Battle Pass (for now), the Batman Variant alone costs 2000 Gleamium (AKA one 2,200 pack). Luckily, all the other Variants are of Epic Rarity and cost a bit less at 1500 Gleamium. But, because there aren't any 500 Gleamium Packs for purchase, only 450, this is still heavily incentivizing players to buy a 2,200 pack anyway. As far as Epic Skins go, there's

Emotes (AKA Taunts): 500 Gleamium

Multiversus - Garnet's Tiny Car Taunt Seen Up-Close

Moving on to the Taunts, MultiVersus is thankfully a fighting game that allows players to Taunt (they call it Emoting) each other after pulling off a great Ringout or combo. And, most if not all of the Taunts in the game are pretty great.

From Shaggy literally ripping his shirt off to Lebron James doing a Salsa dance, there's a lot to love. That is, of course, unless it's a Finn Backpack Attack spammer using their Taunt, of course. That said, all of them are 500 Gleamium, again, just enough to be too expensive for the lowest Gleamium pack. Still, they are high quality, and for anyone that wants them, all the Epic Rarity Taunts include:

Non-Gold Character Unlocks: 700 Gleamium

Multiversus -Highlighting The Cost Of A Character In Gleamium

This next one is likely the least egregious, as these can be unlocked naturally without spending a dime, but are quicker to use money to unlock, and that's the characters themselves. The intended way for players to unlock characters in MultiVersus is to grind out the Gold Currency given to them through level ups, matches, and so on and then spend that Gold on characters that aren't part of the free rotation.

But, players can also just spend Gleamium to save time. The weird part, however, is that every character costs 700 Gleamium exactly (again, an "in-between" amount) but their Gold costs differ based on their technical difficulty. Recommended Characters (the best ones for beginners) cost 1500 Gold, Expert Characters cost 3000, and all other characters cost 2000.

The "Maxed Characters" Badge: 20,000 Gold

Multiversus - Looking At The Cost Of The Maxed Characters Badge

And finally, the last Cosmetic item unrelated to the Founder's Packs or the Battle Pass is the Maxed Characters Badge. For those who don't know, Badges are these little infographic items players can equip to their profile that keep track of things like total Ringouts, Attacks Dodged, and games won with certain characters. When loading into a match against another player, their equipped badge shows up on the top-right of their character box, and players can check their stats.

RELATED: Capcom Fighting Collection: Tips for Newcomers to Darkstalkers

Now, the Maxed Character's Badge keeps track of exactly how many characters the player has leveled to the "maximum" for their rewards (that being level 15). Of course, characters can level past that, but this lets the opponent know just how many characters this character plays. That said, this Badge does cost 20,000 Gold to purchase. That's right, it costs Gold, not Gleamium, and almost enough Gold to unlock just about every character on the Roster instead of purchasing it, so it's a big commitment.

The Founder's Packs: $40, $60, Or $100

All Three Founder Pack rewards In One Image

And of course, this list wouldn't be complete without mentioning the Founder's Packs for MultiVersus, the optional purchases that may or may not have leaked how many characters are coming in the near future. There are three different Packs that players can buy, a Standard ($40 USD), a Deluxe ($60 USD), and a Premium Pack ($100 USD). These are by far the biggest lump sum that players can drop on MultiVersus right now and include a wide range of cosmetics in them, such as:

Standard

Deluxe

Premium

And, considering the 30 Character Tickets as part of the Premium Founder's Pack are almost double what the current roster of characters even is, it's safe to say that this is both the most expensive item but also the one that gives the most for the money spent.

The Premium Battle Pass: 300 Gleamium

Multiversus - Pre Season Battle Pass Key Art

And last but not least, the Battle Pass items. MultiVersus currently has its pre-season Battle Pass going on until August 8th, and there are a ton of Cosmetics that are unlocked within it (and it takes a while to complete), both through the Premium Pass (which costs 300 Gleamium) or the Free Pass, such as:

And, it's been confirmed in the Open Beta FAQ for MultiVersus on their website that the items in the Battle Pass aren't exclusive and may come back for purchase at a later date. Whether they'll come back as items obtainable in-game, through Gleamium, or some other means, that much still isn't clear. Either way, for a measly 300 Gleamium, getting 12 different Cosmetics is a steal, so the Battle Pass is by far the best money investment in MultiVersus at the moment.
