Highlights

  • MultiVersus is relaunching in 2024 with exciting new features, characters, and PvE mode, now on Unreal Engine 5.
  • A previous drop in players and lack of communication may hinder the success of the game's comeback.
  • Player First Games faces pressure to deliver a successful relaunch and maintain steady content updates for MultiVersus.

Almost a year after shutting down, MultiVersus is set to explode back onto the scene with its impending relaunch. Players will once again be able to fight it out in a massive crossover experience with some of the world's biggest properties. To make things even better, the studio has tossed in a plethora of new features, including PvE, new characters, and a completely new engine. While it remains to be seen if MultiVersus will succeed, what is in store seems exciting so far.

At the same time, MultiVersus' relaunch may be too little too late. The game was already losing steam before the open beta came to a close, so general audiences may not be as interested in it. Additionally, the fact it shut down after players spent money on it and there was practically no news about when it was coming back may have put even more players off. All of that puts a ton of pressure on the relaunch to deliver, because if it cannot, then this crossover fighter may never make the impact Warner Bros. wants it to.

MultiVersus' Relaunch May Not Be Enough to Bring the Game Back

MultiVersus Was Already Fading During Its Beta Period

Back in 2022, it seemed like MultiVersus was going to be the next big crossover fighter, rivaling that of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Players quickly fell in love with its roster and gameplay mechanics and spent hours battling each other online. It became the biggest launch for any fighting game on PC and the most successful WB Games title on the platform. A month after launch, it hit 10 million players, and by September, 20 million had jumped on. It felt like it was here to stay; however, things rapidly fell apart a year later.

In February 2023, MultiVersus suffered from a significant drop in daily players. There just was not enough coming out to keep players engaged, so they began turning to other things. In response, Player First Games announced that the game was going to be taken offline to prepare for a full launch at some point in the future. That announcement shocked many people as they believed it was already fully released, with some even spending money on the title.

With no news on when, or if, the game would actually come back, those players were locked out of everything they had purchased—all of that made it seem like the days of Multiversus had crawled to a disappointing end.

The Changes Might Not Rectify MultiVersus Past Shortcomings

Now, a year after closing its doors, MultiVersus is coming back with its full release. Fighting game fans have a lot to look forward to from this relaunch as Player First Games is promising an entirely revamped experience. Not only will it feature even more characters and stages, but there will even be a PvE game mode, and the entire game is being upgraded to Unreal Engine 5. That all sounds extremely promising, and yet some players may have already moved on.

The studio has shown it is willing to take the game offline for an extended period of time, and there is seemingly no reason it could not do that again. On top of all of that, there was practically no news about this game for months, so some players may not even know it still exists.

Player First Games needs to make sure MultiVersus' relaunch is worth it because right now there seems to be a lot stacked up against it. This struggle will not stop at launch, either, as the studio has to ensure that there is a steady stream of content to keep players coming back for more. It feels like a great time for a crossover fighter like this since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is no longer getting content, but if the studio is not extremely careful, then it could suffer the same fate as the open beta.
