Various crossover fighting games have tried to take on Super Smash Bros. over the years, with varying degrees of success. However, few have been as successful as the recently-released MultiVersus, a free-to-play fighting game with a roster comprised of characters like Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, Batman, Arya Stark from Game of Thrones, Bugs Bunny, Finn and Jake from Adventure Time, and many others.

MultiVersus has been a big hit since launching its open beta, which managed to attract 10 million players. Now that MultiVersus Season 1 has launched, the game has passed another impressive milestone. As announced by Warner Bros. Interactive, MultiVersus has surpassed over 20 million players. It seems that MultiVersus' popularity is only growing as the days go on, and as long as it can keep this momentum going, it seems Warner Bros. Interactive has a big free-to-play hit on its hands.

Like any other free-to-play live service game, the main way MultiVersus is going to keep players engaged for the long-term is by adding new content. Luckily, MultiVersus Season 1 should have plenty of new content for fans to sink their teeth into by the time it wraps up on November 15. In fact, there are at least four new characters on the way for MultiVersus in Season 1, along with two new game modes.

As previously announced, the MultiVersus roster is adding Morty Smith from Rick and Morty on August 23. Rick Sanchez from the same franchise is also coming to MultiVersus in Season 1, though a specific release date has not been announced at the time of this writing. Fans can also look forward to the addition of Black Adam of DC Comics fame, as well as Stripe from Gremlins. The new game modes, meanwhile, are the Classic Arcade and Ranked modes, which currently lack solid release dates.

While this is all the new MultiVersus content that's been confirmed in an official capacity so far, leaks have given fans a decent idea of what to expect from future updates. If the leaks are accurate, it seems MultiVersus fans can look forward to characters like Beetlejuice and the Wicked Witch of the West, along with characters from The Matrix franchise. Those characters have yet to be confirmed, but data mining efforts have suggested that they are indeed planned for the game.

There are plenty of characters that would make great additions to the MultiVersus roster, but what's there now should still keep fans plenty busy.

MultiVersus is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
