While Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. has been a big hit since its inception, other companies have had mixed success in releasing similar crossover fighting games. However, Warner Bros.' MultiVersuswas a success before it was even officially released, and its Steam launch was reportedly the most successful of any WB Games title.MultiVersus already features a diverse roster taken from WB franchises, including Batman, Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, Game of Thrones, and more. However, Warner Bros. still has plenty more IP to pull from, and the developer had already announced plans to introduce additional characters. If the latest leak is accurate, this may soon include a character from the popular sci-fi series The Matrix.Dataminer AisulMV, who leaked that the Wicked Witch of the West is coming to MultiVersus, recently found evidence indicating that Neo or one of his friends may be among the characters joining the game. According to AisulMV, a recent MultiVersus update added a Matrix Code particle animation and texture to the game. They shared both on Twitter, along with a newly added heart texture. None of these currently appear anywhere in the game, signaling that developers are laying the groundwork for new Matrix content coming relatively soon.
Unfortunately, the mined data doesn’t indicate which characters are coming or whether the upcoming DLC will also include any Matrix-inspired stages. Out of The Matrix’s cast, the series' protagonist Neo is probably the most likely candidate, and his skills seem well-suited to a fighting game like MultiVersus. Antagonist Agent Smith also seems likely, though other main characters like Trinity and Morpheus may not be off the table. However, until someone reveals more information, educated guesses may be the best anyone can do.
MultiVersus so far incorporates a variety of characters from a range of different Warner Bros. franchises. These include Finn and Jake from Adventure Time, Shaggy and Velma from Scooby-Doo, and Steven and Garnet from Steven Universe. MultiVersus also features Tom and Jerry as a single character. In addition, the Looney Tunes’ Bugs Bunny and Taz are accompanied by the Space Jam 2 version of LeBron James. Meanwhile, MultiVersus also boasts several popular DC characters, including Batman, Harley Quinn, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Also present are Game of Throne’s Arya Stark and the Iron Giant from the film of the same name. Finally, MultiVersus features one original character, Reindog.
Announced upcoming characters include Rick and Morty, Black Adam, and Stripe from Gremlins. Meanwhile, earlier leaks revealed several possible characters, including but not limited to Scooby-Doo, Daenerys Targaryen, the Joker, Raven, Samurai Jack, and the Powerpuff Girls. With MultiVersus casting such a wide net, it is not hard to believe that characters from The Matrix could make their way to the game sooner or later.
MultiVersus is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
