Warner Bros and Player FIrst Games are just a few months removed from a well recieved alpha test for its brawler, Multiversus. During that time, players who were granted access got to experience a good portion of what the game has to offer, including a roster full of characters from various Warner Bros franchises ranging from Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo, DC Comics, and otrhers. The closed alpha also showed off cosmetic and customization options earned from in-game currency as well as a battle pass, which follows suit for most free to play games.

Starting on July 19, early access to a planned Open Beta for Multiversus kicks off, giving invited players as well as those picking up the Founders Pack a chance to go hands on with the latest build before everyone else on July 26. In fact, Player First Games is using this open beta session as a soft launch for Multiversus as the studio isn't planning to change much of its core gameplay mechanics ahead of a full launch later this year.

That means, those who jump in are getting a good look at what the final product will offer, including its microtransaction elements and battle pass mechanics. As expected, there's a lot that players can unlock through both playing and paying and some of that includes playable characters.

Unlocking New Characters

Inside the open beta for Multiversus, the playable roster is set at 16 in total, which includes the most recent reveal of the colossal character Iron Giant. However, upon booting up the open beta, 11 out of the 16 characters will need to be unlocked with 2,000 gold coins each. The playable list includes:

  • Shaggy (Scooby Doo)
  • Jake (Adventure Time)
  • Taz (Looney Toons)
  • Harley Quinn (DC Comics)
  • Wonder Woman (DC Comics) - Can be unlocked after fully completing the tutorial.

Thankfully, unlocking the rest of these characters is pretty straightforward and can be done from the Collection menu when enough currency is earned. There are a few different methods to unlocking them, some require a bit more grinding than others, especially for Multiversus players that don't want to spend any real money.

Earning Currency to Unlock Characters

As previously indicated, there are two ways to unlock new characters, either with Gold or the game's premium currency known as Gleamium. For those who opt to purchase Gleamium, characters can be unlocked for 700 of the premium currency, which is somewhere inbetween $5 and $10.

Alternatively, players can opt to pick up one of the Founders Pack versions which offers instant access to the Multiversus beta along with a variety of unlocks. The standard version retails for $40 and comes with 15 character unlock tokens, more than enough to unlock the current locked roster, 300 Gleamium, and 1 Exclusive rare Banner cosmetic. The Deluxe version is $60 and features 20 Character Unlock Tokens, 1,000 Gleamium, 1 Premium Battle Pass unlock as well as epic level cosmetics.

Finally, for those who want to drop a lot of coin, the Premium pack has 30 character token unlocks, 2,500 Gleamium, 1 unique nameplate, 3 Premium Battle Pass unlocks, everything released on the previous Founders Packs, as well as Legendary banners and Ring Out Effects.

However, players don't need to purchase anything to unlock characters. Simply playing Multiversus earns players Gold, an in-game resource that can be used to unlock new content from the in-game store. Coins are earned in all sorts of ways including playing matches, leveling up the battle pass/profile/characters, as well as completing daily and weekly challenges.

MultiVersus is expected to launch in 2022 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
