Marvel Studios has recruited a team filmmakers to direct episodes of the Ms. Marvel series for Disney+. The roster of directors includes Meera Menon, Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Bad Boys for Life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.

In 2018, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed plans to introduce Kamala Khan to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the release of Captain Marvel. The details of those plans were unveiled during Marvel Studios' presentation at D23 2019 when Feige officially announced a Ms. Marvel series was being developed for Disney+ to introduce fans to Kamala Khan before she is featured in future Marvel Studios films.

The Direct first reported on the involvement of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who will direct multiple episodes from scripts penned by writer and showrunner Bisha K. Ali. The duo's previous credits included Black and Pastor before they sat in the director's chair for the third installment of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's Bad Boys film series, which is currently the highest-grossing U.S. film of 2020 with $425.6 million worldwide. In 2012, director Obaid-Chinoy made history as the first Pakistan-born filmmaker to win an Academy Award for her documentary Saving Face and she would earn a second Oscar in 2016 for A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness. Menon's most well-known previous credits include episodes of Walking Dead, The Punisher, Titans, For All Mankind, and Outlander, but her feature work includes the independent film Farah Goes Bang and the 2016 Sundance entry Equity.

Created by Sana Amanat, G. Willow Wilson, and Adrian Alphona, Kamala Khan was introduced in 2014 as the first Muslim character to frontline her own Marvel comic title. In the comic book lore, Khan is a Pakistani-American from Jersey City, New Jersey who discovers she has inhuman genes that grant her shapeshifting abilities. After her mentor Carol Danvers relinquishes the Ms. Marvel title to become Captain Marvel, Khan takes up the abandoned moniker to protect her local community.

Ms. Marvel is not only one of the many projects Marvel Studios has lined up as it moves toward producing television shows alongside feature films, it also marks the latest effort on the company to include more diverse talent both onscreen and behind the camera. While the role of Kamala Khan has yet to be cast, the character will become the first Muslim hero in any Marvel Studios' project.

While moviegoing audiences may be unfamiliar with Khan, the character has become one of the more popular newcomers to most comic book readers. In fact, the heroine has proven to be successful enough to merit being a member of the titular team in the Marvel's Avengers video game that was released in early September.

Ms. Marvel is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2022.
