Quality is subjective, and movies are no exception to this rule. What one viewer appreciates is something another one dislikes. Even well-known awards such as the Oscars, or their exact opposite, the Razzies, are subjective, based on the opinions of people who rate the movies.

As a result, multiple movies were nominated for both an Oscar and a Razzie throughout the years, despite the fact that the Oscars focus on high-quality movies and the Razzies on low-quality ones. Even if the movies failed to win their nominations, the fact that they were represented at both of the awards suggests how polarizing they were for critics.

5 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

When the fans have high expectations, they're automatically setting themselves up for disappointment. The original Star Wars trilogy, Episodes IV to VI, remains one of the most beloved franchises of all time. As such, the prequel series was under even bigger scrutiny than most new movies. The franchise's fans came in great numbers to see it in 1999, resulting in a box office gross of over a billion dollars. But not everybody was happy with what they saw.

The traditional complaint was that the movie was too childish, and it also had Jar Jar Binks, one of the most hated Star Wars characters. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace was nominated for three Oscars, and seven Razzies, and it won a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor. The award went to none other than Ahmed Best, who played Jar Jar Binks. It's proof that if the movie didn't try to incorporate this character, it probably would have been more successful at the Razzies and with the audiences alike.

4 Transformers (2007)

It often happens that movies nominated for both the Razzies and the Oscars are those the general audience appreciates (judging by their high box office gross) but critics dislike. Transformers did better than other movies that got the dubious honor of being nominated for the two awards. It started a successful movie series, scored 709 million dollars at the box office, and got positive ratings online as well (such as the above-average rating of 7.0 on IMDb).

What's more, the movie was nominated for three Oscars and only for a single Razzie. It didn't win either of the awards. However, it did score the Saturn Award for Best Special Effects, thanks to seamlessly blending the world of the Transformers and their human friends and enemies.

3 Fifty Shades Of Grey (2015)

Cinematic Fashion Icons Christian Grey Fifty Shades of Grey Jamie Dornan

Based on the bestseller by E. L. James, Fifty Shades of Grey scored a respectable box office gross of 569 million dollars with a budget of 55 million dollars. What's even less known is that the movie, despite being critically panned, earned one Oscar nomination, for Best Original Song. It didn't win, though, unlike with the Razzies, which the movie took by storm.

Fifty Shades of Grey got six Razzie nominations and won five of them: Worst Movie, Worst Screenplay, Worst Actor (Jamie Dornan), Worst Actress, (Dakota Johnson), and Worst Screen Combo. The last win reflects the fact that the main actors didn't have chemistry between them that would help sell the characters' romance, which was instrumental in the success of the book. Both Johnson and Dornan have given stronger performances in other movies and TV shows, proving that the fault for the movie's 'success' at the Razzies didn't lie solely with them.

2 Suicide Squad (2016)

Superhero movies don't often win Oscars, with a few notable exceptions (such as the 2018 movie Black Panther). The DCEU has had its ups and downs over the years. Suicide Squad fits more into the second category, judging by the ratings, reviews, and Razzie nominations. The movie got two Razzie nominations, for Worst Screenplay, and for Jared Leto's portrayal of the Joker.

After the Oscar-winning performance of Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight (2008), Leto's Joker wasn't well accepted by the public. The movie still came out victorious in the end since it didn't win any Razzies, but scored an Oscar for makeup and hairstyling, proving that even though the story had some weak spots, the movie still looked good visually.

1 Blonde (2022)

One of the most recent movies that earned a nomination for both the Oscars and the Razzies is the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde. Starring Ana de Armas, the movie tells the story of Marilyn Monroe's complicated life. While the critics appreciated Ana de Armas' performance, they didn't like the fact that the movie takes creative liberties with reality and takes some of the scenes a step too far.

This was further cemented by the fact that Ana de Armas was nominated for an Oscar for best performance. However, although Blonde earned a single Oscar nomination, it also scored a whopping eight Razzie nominations, including the ones for Worst Movie, Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay. While there were many worse-rated movies that premiered in 2022, Blonde created high expectations, and it failed to fulfill them in the eyes of the Razzie nomination committee.
