Released in August 2020, Mortal Shell was a SoulsLike game that gave fans of the genre a unique experience. It took a lot of inspiration from FromSoftware's SoulsBorne games, and combined them with characteristics of its own to provide an experience worth checking out for every fan of the genre.

The Hallowed sword is the first sword players acquire in Mortal Shell. Despite this, it is a powerful sword more than capable of helping players through the entirety of the game. This guide will cover the full upgrade path of the Hallowed sword to, including its special abilities, to ensure players are able to maximize its effectiveness.

Hallowed Sword Abilities

The Hallowed Sword comes equipped with two abilities, the Mechanical Spike and the Molten Spike. These abilities allow players to inflict devastating amounts of damage to foes. Both the Mechanical and the Molten spikes are triggered using (L1+R1) and consume two resolve each.

Mechanical Spike

Players can find the mechanical spike in Fallgrim. Following the Fallgrim tower, players should enter the cave in front, where they will find a Grishna boss. Upon beating the Grishna, players will discover a chest nearby that contains the Mechanical Spike.

This ability makes a spike emerge from the Hallowed Sword. Players then deal an attack to their foes with this spike that deals tons of damage. During the animation of the Mechanical Spike, players can not take any damage.

Molten Spike

In the Poison Frog river, players will come across as a cave with a camp guarded by a Grishna. In this cave, players will find a chest that can only be accessed during the fog state. In this chest lies the Molten spike.

The Molten spike causes a smoldering spike to emerge from the Hallowed sword. This is followed by an attack that does tremendous amount of damage and inflicts fire damage on foes.

How To Fully Upgrade The Hallowed Sword In Mortal Shell

To upgrade the Hallowed sword, players will require 5 Quenching Acid. All the upgrades can be conducted on the workbench provided to players in the Fallgrim tower. Alternatively, players can also upgrade the Hallowed Sword at any of the anvils they will stumble upon as they progress through the game.

Quenching Acid Locations

Quenching Acids can be discovered throughout the world of Mortal Shell. During their first playthrough, players will require 5 Quenching Acids to fully upgrade a weapon. During New Game+, 10 Quenching Acids will be required. Here's where to find this item:

  • Fallgrim: Before the temple grounds in Fallgrim, players will encounter a burning Grisha. Near this Grisha will be a campsite that will contain a Quenching acid. Two other Quencing acids can be purchased from Vlas the merchant in the Fallgrim Tower.
  • Shrine Of Ash: Players can find two Quenching Acids here. One can be found in the Monument of Ash. In the room that has claymore enemies preceding the room with the flame demons, players will find a Quenching Acid inside an Iron Maiden. Progressing through the area, players will come across another room with an Iron Maiden that has two Knights. This Iron Maiden holds another Quenching Acid.
  • Crypt Of Martyrs: The first Quenching Acid in this area can be found in the Abandoned Chamber. Players must defeat a Claw Beast to acquire it. The second Quenching Acid in this area can be acquired in the Enshrined Sanctum. From the Enshrined Sanctum, players will find a path to the final area. Following along this path, take a left turn to acquire the second Quenching Acid.

  • Sea Of Infinity: Players can find three Quenching acids in the Sea of Infinity location. They are as follows:
    • The first one can be found at Eternal Nearthex. Before the torch on the right side of Eternal Narthex guarded by ranged mistresses, players will find a chest that contains a Quenching Acid.
    • The second can be found near the Dim Gate. Take the elevator near Sester and progress towards the teleporter, which will take the player to the center platform. Players should then cross the platform and take the teleporter there. Players should then drop down and progress until they discover yet another teleporter that finally brings them to the Quenching Acid.
    • The last Quenching Acid found in the Sea of Infinity can also be found near Dim Gate. Taking the bridge that takes players towards the Shifting Archives, players should take the path that goes downwards. This route will bring players to the last Quenching Acid in the Sea of Infinity.
