As its release grows ever closer, the character roster for Mortal Kombat X continues to grow. Series stalwarts Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade were confirmed by an official trailer released just yesterday, further swelling the varied group of Kombatants that developers NetherRealm Studios have put together. Now, a slasher well-known to horror movie fans is apparently joining the fray.

Rumors of guest characters in Mortal Kombat X  have circulated for some time now, but earlier today it was confirmed that Jason Voorhees of the Friday the 13th series of movies will be bringing his iconic hockey mask and machete to Outworld. Anyone familiar with the Camp Crystal Lake killings will be well aware that Jason is a perfect fit for the series' notorious levels of violence.

Little is known about how Jason will play in the game, as his reveal simply shows his in-game model lurking menacingly in the shadows. It was announced, however, that he'll be included as part of a DLC package rather than being in the base game, as was teased by director Ed Boon several months ago.

Jason follows in the footsteps of rival killer Freddy Kreuger, who appeared as DLC for 2011's Mortal Kombat reboot. His inclusion in the game will likely restart the debate as to what guest characters fans want to appear in Mortal Kombat X, as one would imagine that there's more to come than just Voorhees.

Console-specific guests like Sweet Tooth seem increasingly unlikely, but Jason's unveiling means that cinematic scrappers might not be out of the question. Might the recent rumors of the Predator and Colonel Al Dillon being added into the game's healthy roster turn out to be true after all? It seems that we'll just have to wait and see.

However, we won't have to wait very long. There's only one month until Mortal Kombat X hits current-gen consoles, and it's clear that a huge marketing push will be ongoing until then. NetherRealm Studios is obviously very happy with the game that it has put together, and its showing as much of it off as possible to work fans up into a frenzy.

The excitement surrounding the release of a new Mortal Kombat game will have series veterans feeling like they're back in the 90s. Coming off the back on an excellent entry that managed to get the franchise back on track, it's not at all surprising that players are eager for more — and it looks like the follow-up is set to be even bigger and better.

Mortal Kombat X is set to release on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on April 14, 2015.
