The long awaited trailer for Mortal Kombat the movie is here and every single one of the tournament’s entrants are looking as fine as they ever have in a preview that promises to deliver just the right amount of gruesome action Mortal Kombat has been notorious for since the early 90s.

Yesterday the official Mortal Kombat movie account had shared exciting posters featuring individual characters that gave an early clue at how the producers had nailed down the perfect look for each member of the cast, with Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Shang Tsung and Raiden taunting their powers. Despite an early leak of a lower quality Russian version of the trailer, the official one was very much worth the wait for the visual spectacle.

Mortal Kombat’s trailer starts narrated by Sonya Blade, as the United States Special Forces agent reminds everyone of Jax Briggs’ origins story for the film which is basically Earthrealm’s first contact with Sub-Zero and has the frosty Lin Kuei freeze and tear Jax’s limbs in true fatality fashion. It then introduces audiences to the film’s protagonist Cole Young, a Mortal Kombat newcomer that’ll likely help to ease the plot burden from the beloved Mortal Kombat characters that are then introduced. The result is simply mind-blowing, so it’s best to simply watch it.

Aside from Sonya, Jax and Sub-Zero, the trailer gives convincing early looks at the fighting styles and powers that Kano, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Raiden, Scorpion and Mileena will show off in the movie, as well as some characters that hadn’t exactly been seen before, such as Goro and what appears to be some form Reptile getting torn apart by Kano. As if all that weren’t enough, Sub-Zero and Scorpion face off just like in the old days using their signature Freeze Slides and Spear (“Get Over here!” included), and absolutely everything is seasoned with Mortal Kombat bloody gore.

Fans of the original Mortal Kombat movie from 1995 might notice some sound cues towards the end that nod to The Immortals classic “Techno Syndrome” which was the main electro theme song used in that film and is still loved by Mortal Kombat fans to this day. Though a trailer is far from being definitive material, the new Mortal Kombat movie looks every bit as brutal and amazing as any modern fan of the games could expect.

Story wise, newfound hero Cole Young will take on the decades old challenge of entering the Mortal Kombat tournament, as the heroes of Earthrealm look to defend this dimension from whatever mischievous scheme the forces of Outworld that are plotting from within Shao Kahn’s fortress. So just like the games, it’s classic Mortal Kombat and it looks amazing.

Mortal Kombat is planned for release in theaters and on HBO Max starting April 16, 2021.
