Warner Bros. has attempted to get a Mortal Kombat movie reboot off the ground for years, with little to no luck. However, a few months ago, screenwriter Greg Russo confirmed that the Mortal Kombat movie had a script, location, director, and cast list, but was still waiting on the official go-ahead from Warner Bros. Now it appears Warner Bros. has given the green light for the Mortal Kombat movie reboot, with James Wan serving as producer.

For the uninitiated, James Wan is known for his work on both mainstream blockbuster movies as well as horror films. He recently directed Aquaman, which pulled in over $1 billion at the box office, and he has also worked on the Fast and Furious franchise. In terms of horror films, he's best known as the director of Saw and the creator of The Conjuring cinematic universe. Needless to say, Wan's experience with both blood-soaked horror films and over-the-top action movies should make him a unique asset for the Mortal Kombat movie reboot.

Meanwhile, the Mortal Kombat movie will be shot in South Australia on the Adelaide Studios Sound Stages. It will be directed by Simon McQuoid, who is making his directorial debut with the Mortal Kombat movie.

Unfortunately, further details on the Mortal Kombat movie reboot and what it will entail are unavailable at the time of this writing. We don't know which Mortal Kombat game the plot will be inspired by, or if it will decide to carve out a unique story all its own. A previous leak claims that it will be about a new character named Cole Turner who is recruited to protect Earthrealm, but that has yet to be confirmed. We also don't know any of the actors that have been hired to play the franchise's iconic characters.

While we don't know the actors that will be appearing the Mortal Kombat movie reboot, a character list did leak a couple months ago. If that list is accurate, these are the Mortal Kombat characters in the movie reboot:

  • Jax
  • Kano
  • Kung Lao
  • Liu Kang
  • Mileena
  • Raiden
  • Shang Tsung
  • Sonya Blade
  • Sub-Zero

Now that production is actually starting on the Mortal Kombat movie reboot, hopefully more details are revealed to fans sooner rather than later.

Mortal Kombat is currently in pre-production.
