The Mortal Kombat movie from the 90s has a valid claim to be the best movie inspired by a fighting game, though its competition is mediocre at best, but the new Mortal Kombat film is looking to make a name on its own right.

So far WarnerMedia and HBO Max have shown very little of what’s to come for Mortal Kombat in 2021 with only a couple of sneak peeks being teased in January and also in an HBO video showcasing their 2021 movie offering. After many pandemic-related delays, Mortal Kombat is now looking readier than ever with some awesome-looking posters released just ahead of its official trailer premiere.

The posters shared on Twitter today feature an important part of Mortal Kombat’s roster with the likes of Sub-Zero, Kano, Mileena, Kung Lao, Shang Tsung, Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, Raiden, and Jax Briggs all getting a first look up-close showing some of their power, but newcomer and protagonist for the Mortal Kombat movie Cole Young (Lewis Kan) also got the same treatment. All the previews promote the Mortal Kombat trailer, which is set to premiere on Thursday, February 18 at 12:00 pm ET and Mortal Kombat is even getting its own Twitter emoji for the occasion.

Mortal Kombat will be out on a dual release in theaters and on HBO Max, with the current poster confirming the April 16 premiere. The film stars Joe Taslim, Josh Lawson, Sisi Stringer, Max Huang, Chi Han, Jessica McNamee, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano, and Mehcad Brooks, in roles listed above, while Lewis Tan is set to play Earthrealm native Cole Young, an average MMA fighter handpicked by destiny with a familiar Mortal Kombat birthmark to fight against the forces of Outworld.

This film reboot for Mortal Kombat is being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures so there’s an odd chance that Mortal Kombat 11’s ties to Warner could end up turning the movie’s protagonist into a potential DLC character for the game, or just have him end up in the eventual Mortal Kombat 12.

The last couple of years have seen Mortal Kombat reach the peak of its powers, with Netherealm Studios reaching mainstream media thanks to collaborations with rappers like Megan Thee Stallion or the multiple inclusion or pop culture icons like Terminator, the Joker, RoboCop, and Rambo.

Mortal Kombat is planned for release in theaters and on HBO Max starting April 16, 2021.
