A recent job listing posted by NetherRealm Studios hints at the potential for next generation iterations of its popular Mortal Kombat and Injustice series. This doesn't come as a shock to most as it was presumed that these titles would be continuing on with the start of the new generation, but serves as a sort of confirmation of that assumption.

The information comes from a job listing for a Software Engineer and reveals some other interesting information about the future of those franchises. Of course, this shouldn't be taken as an official announcement about Mortal Kombat or Injustice, as those games could still be quite far away, but it seems that NetherRealm is at least starting to work on them.

Naturally there is no title for either of these games, although fans may be able to make some kind of educated guess about that. If the games simply follow their current numbering scheme, then fans could expect to see Mortal Kombat 12 and Injustice 3, though the names may be different for next gen releases.

5 Guest Characters That Should Come to Mortal Kombat 11

Some notable mentions in this job description include the prerequisite of experience with Unreal Engine 4. NetherRealm says that the next Mortal Kombat and Injustice games will use an Unreal 4 based engine, a direct upgrade from their most recent games, Mortal Kombat 11 and Injustice 2, which both use Unreal 3 based engines at the moment. It's not entirely clear how this upgrade will affect gameplay, but it does show that the team is trying to step up their game and create a more polished product.

Along those lines, NetherRealm is also hiring a Senior Advanced Graphics Engineer with the goal to "develop state-of-the-art graphics technology for PS5, and Xbox Series X." Considering that Mortal Kombat 11 was already a huge graphical leap when compared to previous Mortal Kombat games, it will be interesting to see just how much further next generation hardware allows NetherRealm to go with Mortal Kombat 12 and Injustice 3. The company also posted a job listing for a Senior Technical Animator to push the visuals of these next generation games even further beyond what fans may be expecting.

All of this acts as a teaser for what the future of the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises hold. With any luck, NetherRealm Studios will come out with an official announcement about these games sometime soon, but until then fans will just have to wait. It also serves as a sneak peak of what next generation consoles will be capable of in general.
