If Ed Boon has anything to say about it, upcoming installments of Mortal Kombat will continue to embrace horror in ways familiar with pop culture fans.Ed Boon got candid on Twitter, as he had time to answer fan questions. The next NetherRealm’s game is supposedly between Mortal Kombat 12 and Injustice 3, and if it is the former, Boon has good news for horror fans that are hoping for scarier characters in the franchise.RELATED: Mortal Kombat 11 Gothic Horror Skin Pack RevealedA fan on Twitter asked Boon if there would be more horror guest characters in future Mortal Kombat installments. He had a strong response to the question by suggesting that fans can absolutely expect more horror characters, in more or less words. Even though there was a recent announcement that the Mortal Kombat: Onslaught mobile RPG is in development, fans are more so hoping that Boon is referring to the next iteration of the mainline titles. Although it is still up in the air on how long fans will have to wait for the next main title, as Injustice 3 is rumored to be a possibility for what NetherRealm does next.

Mortal Kombat 10and 11 both embraced and took advantage of the horror genre for DLC purposes, such as the gothic horror skin pack, and horror DLC guest characters in Mortal Kombat 11 that fans may be familiar with, such as Joker, Spawn, Freddy Krueger, Jason, Predator, Leatherface, and even the Xenomorph. For Boon to come out and say that NetherRealm will be embracing more of this genre in future installments is good news, as Mortal Kombat is absolutely the fighting franchise to implement those kinds of characters. Despite its already impressive roster, there are still many horror characters that Mortal Kombat can introduce in all mediums of entertainment, such as Pyramid Head and Ghostface.

It has been assumed that Injustice 3 is already in development, but according to insiders, it is speculated that Mortal Kombat 12 is next for NetherRealm, due to uncertainty of the video game studio’s standing at Warner Bros Discovery, given its recent change in management. Regardless of what fighting franchise NetherRealm works on next, players can expect to see many more horror elements added into the games. In another tweet, Boon revealed that he would also like to add Raven from Teen Titans to Injustice 3, which consequently opens the door for Trigon, which would be a great horror addition to the roster seeing as how Darkseid, another scary villain, is already a playable character in the previous game.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
