Mortal Kombat 2 producer Todd Garner offered fans a first look at one of the new cast members as a fan-favorite character from the video game series.

The first Mortal Kombat film of the rebooted continuity was released in 2021. While the film got a so-so reception, there was enough interest to warrant a second outing, which came to fruition when it was announced in July 2022 that a Mortal Kombat sequel was in the works, with Warner Bros. set to release it theatrically. With the SAG-AFTRA strikes resolved and the entire industry shifting back into gear, work on the sequel has picked up, with fans now getting some updates on what’s happening behind the scenes.

Mortal Kombat 1's Rumored Deathstroke Character Makes a Lot of Sense

Deathstroke may make an appearance as one of Mortal Kombat 1's DLC characters according to leaks, and he would be a pretty sensible inclusion.

As the latest addition to a parade of on-set shots posted to his social media account on X, Mortal Kombat 2 producer Garner shared a low-res image featuring a close-up shot of actress Tati Gabrielle's face, giving fans the first official look at the star in her role as Jade, a character from the Mortal Kombat video game series. The upcoming sequel needs to do a lot to improve on 2021’s Mortal Kombat, and the additions made to the cast between films are a significant part of that improvement. The responses to the post were predictably excited, with many fans reiterating their praise for the casting decision to go with Gabriell for the role and others asking to see the entire costume before passing judgment.

Jade is one of the franchise’s most popular characters and has been a fan favorite for quite some time, with Ed Boon acknowledging fan demand for Jade in Mortal Kombat 1, the game franchise’s latest installment. Her inclusion and the much-requested addition of another longtime fan-favorite in The Boys star Karl Urban's Johnny Cage are some of the most compelling reasons why fans should pay attention to the upcoming sequel. The two talented stars and fellow newcomer Adeline Rudolph join a cast that already includes Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada, reprising roles from the first film.

With Mortal Kombat: Annihilation potentially being the worst sequel ever and the reason the franchise needed a two-decade rest period and a reboot to salvage, there’s a lot of pressure on Mortal Kombat 2 to keep the ball rolling and outdo the first film. Whether or not the stellar casting and prompt resumption are good signs of things to come will be left for the fans to decide at theatres.

Mortal Kombat 2 is in production.
