Fans might be getting an update on Mortal Kombat 12 sooner than they were expecting, at least if one reliable insider is to be believed. Speculation that NetherRealm has begun work on the next Mortal Kombat began as soon as the studio announced it was done supporting Mortal Kombat 11 back in July 2021, but it wasn’t until this February that Mortal Kombat 12 was confirmed. A high-ranking Warner Bros Discovery executive let it slip that MK 12 was in the works during a quarterly earnings call, sending the fighting game community abuzz with renewed speculation about what this newest sequel will bring to the table.Even Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon responded to the sudden reveal of Mortal Kombat 12 with an amusing joke, before slowly sharing some insight about which video game characters from other franchises won’t appear as guest fighters and - more importantly - when fans should expect a more official announcement for Mortal Kombat 12. While nothing has been set in stone as of this writing, NetherRealm could be pulling back the veil of secrecy surrounding Mortal Kombat 12 sooner than many were expecting.RELATED: Ed Boon Reveals Why He Doesn't Want Last of Us' Ellie As A Mortal Kombat 12 Guest FighterWindows Central reporter and gaming insider Jez Corden recently hinted that Mortal Kombat 12 news could be coming within the span of a few weeks. In a Twitter response to popular fighting game streamer Maximilian Dood, Corden answered Dood’s hope that MK 12 has “the speed of MK9 decision making” with a reply of “I think you'll find out more next month.” Corden has proven himself to be reliable in the past, and since there has been no indication that NetherRealm will make a Mortal Kombat 12 announcement in the next week, a May reveal seems more likely.

Additionally, the WBD earnings call that revealed Mortal Kombat 12 also noted that MK 12 could be released sometime this year. This would be a tricky time for NetherRealm to release a new fighting game, as Street Fighter 6 is set to launch in June and Tekken 8 is rumored to be released in 2023 as well. Not only that, but both Guilty Gear Strive and King of Fighters will receive expansion DLC throughout the year, solidifying 2023 as a busy and exciting year for fighting game enthusiasts.

Still, if Mortal Kombat 12 is indeed coming out in 2023, it would make sense for NetherRealm to reveal more news sooner rather than later. Fans have eagerly awaited the next installment of the legendary Mortal Kombat franchise, and if Jez Corden is correct then they might only have to wait a few more weeks before the next big development for MK 12.
