Ed Boon is asking Mortal Kombat fans what past game modes they would like to see return in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 12. The Mortal Kombat co-creator has often engaged with fans on social media, sharing interesting stories behind the creation of NetherRealm’s beloved fighting game franchise and playfully teasing about what his studio might be working on next. That new project was seemingly revealed during a Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call in February, when a high-ranking executive let it slip that NetherRealm is developing the often-rumored Mortal Kombat 12. Ed Boon himself had an amusing reaction to this on social media, and fans have since been scouring the internet looking for clues about when Mortal Kombat 12 could be released. So far, the aforementioned earnings call suggested it could come out later this year, but many are weary of this since both Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 are also set to arrive in 2023.RELATED: Ed Boon Has Perfect Reaction to Mortal Kombat 12 LeakIn the meantime, Ed Boon has taken to social media to ask players about what they would like to see in Mortal Kombat 12 - namely what modes from past entries they would like to see return. So far, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance’s Konquest Mode is the leading option in Boon's recent Twitter poll, followed by the Mario Kart-style Motor Kombat from Mortal Kombat Armageddon, the board game-like Chess Kombat from Mortal Kombat: Deception, and the Tetris-based Puzzle Kombat from Mortal Kombat: Deception.

Konquest Mode leading this poll is interesting, as this isn’t the first time that Ed Boon has suggested that Mortal Kombat 12 bring the popular single-player feature back. First introduced in 2002’s Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Konquest was initially a series of standalone missions that let players practice with Mortal Kombat’s roster of fighters. It would be greatly expanded on in Mortal Kombat: Deception, where it became an RPG-like adventure starring a brand-new character named Shujinko. Konquest Mode would return one last time in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, now taking on an adventure game format and putting players in the role of yet another new character named Taven.

While neither Konquest Mode nor any of the other zany options Ed Boon included in his recent poll have returned in NetherRealm’s rebooted Mortal Kombat series, the studio has always prided itself on giving players plenty of variety in both MK and the DC Comics-based Injustice series. Seeing an alternate single-player mode like Konquest, Chess Kombat, or Puzzle Kombat would certainly be a fun treat for longtime fans while ensuring that newer players keep booting up Mortal Kombat 12 after it supposedly launches sometime this year.

Mortal Kombat 12 is in development.
