While it's currently unknown how much time has been spent on it, fans were shocked and found themselves anticipating the next numbered entry, with many keeping their eyes on the Twitter account of Ed Boon, the series' co-creator.Boon however has historically trolled and teased his followers on Twitter regarding Netherrealm Studios' upcoming projects, and he has been having a lot of fun since the unintentional leak of Mortal Kombat 12. This has ranged from feigning his surprise and even suggesting it was Injustice 3 instead of a new Mortal Kombat game. In addition, he put up a poll regarding modes fans would like to see return. Boon's latest teaser to fans is no different, with it suggesting that they may hear more about the upcoming game possibly soon.The tweet from Ed Boon simply repeats the word "tick" 12 times in a row, which has gotten fans speculating about what it means. The most likely answer fans have theorized is that the number of "ticks" in the tweet is supposed to be in relation to Mortal Kombat 12, with the word itself representing a clock counting down to an imminent announcement of the fighting game. The most prevailing theory is that the game will be revealed on April 19, 2023, as that date will mark Mortal Kombat 9's 12th anniversary.
As of now, however, this is only speculation for Mortal Kombat 12. Fans of NetherRealm are anxiously anticipating the reveal of this game, as it has been nearly two years since the last game, Mortal Kombat 11, received its final update. The only other thing known about MK12 other than its existence is the engine that it will possibly be using, according to past job listings.
2023 is looking to be a rather busy year for the fighting game genre. While little word has been given about Mortal Kombat 12, Capcom's Street Fighter 6 and Bandai Namco's Tekken 8 are currently the most widely anticipated fighting games of 2023, on top of other fighters like Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4. Games like Guilty Gear Strive and The King of Fighters are also getting updates throughout this year, with DLC fighters being added with each new season. Mortal Kombat 12 has a lot of competition this year if it's planning on releasing within 2023.
