Mortal Kombat 1 is already getting its first major update ahead of its launch next week. NetherRealm’s latest fighting game marks a brand-new chapter for the legendary Mortal Kombat series, as the newly-minted Fire God Liu Kang has used the powers he gained at the end of Mortal Kombat 11 to reshape the MK timeline into an era of peace and harmony. However, dark forces are conspiring to plunge this new world into chaos, prompting Liu Kang to gather a band of revamped Mortal Kombat 1 playable characters to defend EarthRelam once again.

While Mortal Kombat 1 isn’t set to release in full until September 14, players who purchased one of the game’s special editions can already try it out for themselves in early access. So far, response to the brutal fighting title has been overwhelmingly positive, with Mortal Kombat 1 quickly becoming one of the highest-rated video games of 2023 as of this writing. While there are some criticisms surrounding the game’s Dragon Crystal microtransactions and story mode, it seems that Mortal Kombat 1 has lived up to the hype built up by NetherRealm over the past several months in the eyes of those who have already played it.
