Highlights

  • Mortal Kombat 1's crossover content with other franchises has been a major success, bringing in powerful and lethal characters from different IPs.
  • Omni-Man from Invincible was highly anticipated by fans and has recently been added to the game, with his release timed to coincide with the new season of Invincible.
  • Though speculation, it would make sense if the release of Homelander from The Boys were closely tied to the release of The Boys' fourth season, with a possible launch window between March and June 2024.

Mortal Kombat 1 had a lot of pressure riding on it prior to release, with a reboot of such a culturally significant franchise needing to pack a serious punch to be justified. While the rebooted characters and gameplay tweaks for the title have been fairly well-received by fans, the crossover content that the title is employing has been one of its largest points of success.

These crossovers have already brought some massive names from other IPs to Mortal Kombat 1, often pulling from the most powerful and lethal figures from a wide range of franchises. Of all these crossovers with Mortal Kombat 1, fans were arguably most looking forward to Invincible's Omni-Man and The Boys' Homelander to be added to the fighting game. The release dates of these figures had been a point of debate among Mortal Kombat fans prior to the game's release, but the recent debut of Omni-Man in tandem with Invincible's new season might have huge implications for Homelander's addition to the title.

Mortal Kombat 1: Omni-Man and Homelander Could Follow Similar Release Patterns

Omni-Man and Liu Kang facing off before a fight in Mortal Kombat 1

The Omni-Man and Homelander crossovers for Mortal Kombat 1 were first announced in July, being a huge statement of intent for what kind of crossovers the game would be introducing throughout its post-launch life-cycle. Both Omni-Man and Homelander are set to be a part of the first DLC character pack for Mortal Kombat 1, which is confirmed to also include the following pop culture icons:

  • Tremor
  • Quan Chi
  • Peacemaker
  • Ermac
  • Takeda Takahashi
  • Janet Cage
  • Khameleon
  • Mavado
  • Ferra

These characters will be a mix of fully-playable and "Kameo" fighters in Mortal Kombat 1, with many being set to release in the near future and others being planned for implementation further down the line. Omni-Man was one of the most anticipated of these character crossovers thanks to his immense power and the vast popularity of Invincible, which launched its second season on November 3.

Less than a week after the launch of Invincible's season two, Omni-Man was finally added to Mortal Kombat 1 on November 9. This makes sense to maximize the popularity of the crossover, with fans having waited almost three years since the release of Invincible's debut season. With Omni-Man now holding a beloved place in Mortal Kombat 1 as a playable fighter, all attention is turning toward Homelander's arrival.

Homelander's Mortal Kombat 1 Crossover Could Be Closely Tied to The Boys Season Four

It has been confirmed by NetherRealm Studios that Homelander is expected to come to Mortal Kombat 1 around Spring 2024, with fans still not having a solid date of when to expect the crossover's launch. Still, while it is difficult to further narrow down when Homelander may come to Mortal Kombat 1, the confirmed Spring release window for the character may reveal when fans of The Boys can expect its anticipated fourth season.

Despite being impacted by the SAG-AFTRA strikes, season four of The Boys is still expected to release at some point during 2024. While official information does not give any further insight as to when the season will release, Homelander's Spring introduction to Mortal Kombat 1 could point toward The Boys season four releasing between March and June.

Of course, the close proximity of Omni-Man's addition to MK1 and the release of Invincible season two could have been coincidental, but it sets a precedent that could easily carry over to Homelander's crossover. With The Boys and Invincible both being Amazon entities, the same marketing strategy could be applied to both crossovers, meaning Mortal Kombat 1 may have let slip when fans should expect The Boys season four to finally release.
