Just as Ed Boon promised during Summer Game Fest, Mortal Kombat 1 has kicked off its press journey on the road to its release. After an intriguing announcement trailer that confirmed Mortal Kombat 1 would be a reboot, NetherRealm followed the hype up swiftly with the title's first gameplay trailer at Summer Game Fest. And now, just a few weeks later, Mortal Kombat's iconic Kombat Kast has returned, where a handful of NetherRealm devs break down some of the game's core mechanics and reveal a bit more about its fighters.

The first Kombat Kast shed a lot of light on some of Mortal Kombat 1's brand new features. The new Kameo system was discussed in length, as well as breakdowns on both Scorpion and Johnny Cage's new moveset, featuring both some classic and brand-new combos for both fighters. But by far the most exciting reveal of Mortal Kombat 1's first Kombat Kast was the game's latest trailer, confirming another handful of fully playable and Kameo fighters.

  • Frost - Kameo

Titled the Lin Kuei trailer, this latest Mortal Kombat 1 teaser focused on the titular ninja clan. Jumping between story cutscenes and actual gameplay, this latest Mortal Kombat 1 trailer confirmed a total of five new characters coming to the game, with two being fully playable, and three being Kameo fighters. After a brief story cutscene showing Scorpion and Sub-Zero's new relationship as brothers, the trailer moved onto a lengthy gameplay section dedicated to Sub-Zero, with Scorpion taking the role of a Kameo fighter. Here, fans can get a better look at how the Kameo system works in general, with Scorpion's Kameo moveset not only being used for offensive attacks, but also a means of escape for Sub-Zero, with one move seeing him avoid an attack by being pulled backwards by Scorpion's spear.

The first new fighter is then introduced. First appearing all the way back in Mortal Kombat 2, Smoke makes his return in Mortal Kombat 1. In the brief cutscene introduction to the character, Scorpion mentions that though they aren't related, he still views Smoke as his brother. Some Smoke-centric gameplay is then shown, displaying some very new moves for the fighter. Unlike previous appearances where Smoke's moveset revolved around projectiles and swift hand chops, Mortal Kombat 1's Smoke fights with a levitating dagger, though he still has plenty of teleport and smoke bomb attacks to keep fans happy.

After some more Sub-Zero gameplay, the trailer cuts to the next new fully playable character confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1: Rain. Another franchise staple, Rain first appeared all the way back in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, though his moveset here is again quite different from his usual combat style. Rather than using his fists or a glaive, Mortal Kombat 1's Rain will use a staff with a ball of water held at the top. Rain manipulates this ball of water in almost all of his moves, using it to create whirlpool portals, huge fist-like waves of water, and giant raindrops that crush his opponent.

Throughout the trailer, three more Kameo fighters are also confirmed to be coming to Mortal Kombat 1. The first of these is Cyrax, the yellow Lin Kuei assassin-turned-cyborg, the next is Sektor, the red Lin Kuei cyborg, and the third and final is Frost, in her original human form. Each of these Kameo fighters boasts an impressive moveset filled with all the attacks fans can expect from these iconic characters including Cyrax's buzzsaw, Sektor's missiles, and Frost's ice daggers.

Mortal Kombat 1 will be released on September 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
