A hands-on preview on the PlayStation Blog has shared more details on this new mode, while Maximilian Dood has also uploaded a video on it. In Invasion, players will be exploring a board game-like map seemingly designed around the locations in the Mortal Kombat universe. Users will be able to take a party of characters on an adventure of sorts, allowing them to level up these units and equip them with new loot. It appears that maps will be somewhat linear in the beginning, before becoming more complex during the latter stages of the mode.

Invasion will feature a ton of unlockables, as players will be earning in-game kurrency, concept art, cosmetics, and other items as they play through the mode. Furthermore, gamers will be able to experience different mini-games as they explore each map in this mode. NetherRealm Studios has also confirmed that it will continue to update the Invasion game mode, so it looks like Mortal Kombat 1 will feature a variety of single-player content, in addition to story mode, to keep fans busy.

The Invasion mode in Mortal Kombat 1 was leaked earlier in August, with the leak stating that it will feature seasonal changes. Overall, it looks like Invasion will be replacing the Krypt in Mortal Kombat 1, which similarly allowed players to obtain in-game items as they played through the game.

While online multiplayer remains a core part of the fighting game genre, newer titles continue to add more single-player content. As an example, Street Fighter 6 offered a World Tour mode at launch, allowing players to explore a 3D world and take part a in variety of activities. It looks like the new Invasion mode of Mortal Kombat 1 will be similarly engaging, especially if it receives consistent updates.

Mortal Kombat 1 releases September 19 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X.
