Mortal Kombat 1 will be featured at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 22, as confirmed by host Geoff Keighley on Twitter. The Mortal Kombat franchise has had a major presence at Keighley's events for years, with Mortal Kombat 11 first announced at The Game Awards all the way back in 2018.

While its title may be confusing to some, Mortal Kombat 1 is actually the follow-up to Mortal Kombat 11. A reboot set in the new timeline created by Fire God Liu Kang, Mortal Kombat 1 is taking the franchise's narrative back to the beginning. Time will tell how fans ultimately react to this reset of the Mortal Kombat timeline, but they will be treated to some fresh information on the game at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 22 at 11am PT/2pm ET.

This was confirmed by Gamescom Opening Night Live host Geoff Keighley, who revealed that not only will Mortal Kombat 1 receive a new trailer at the event, but that game director Ed Boon himself will be making an appearance to present it. Details on what exactly this Mortal Kombat 1 trailer has in store for fans have not been revealed at the time of this writing, so Mortal Kombat fans will just have to tune in to Gamescom on August 22 to find out.

Even though the Mortal Kombat 1 release date isn't until September 19, there's plenty for franchise fans to look forward to this month. Besides the new Mortal Kombat 1 trailer that's dropping at Gamescom Opening Night Live, fans can also get their hands on the game themselves thanks to the pre-order beta.

From August 18 to August 21, anyone that pre-orders Mortal Kombat 1 on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X can try the game's pre-order beta (PC and Nintendo Switch gamers are being left out of the pre-order beta test, unfortunately). Once the Mortal Kombat 1 beta is live, fans will be able to play online as Liu Kang, Kenshi, Kitana, Johnny Cage, Li Mei, and Sub-Zero. They will also have access to the Klassic Tower and a variety of Kameo Fighters.

Kameo Fighters are a new concept for Mortal Kombat 1 wherein players can call on the aid of other characters to assist them in battle. Some fans have expressed their concern about Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat 1, but they can test the feature out for themselves if they decide to play the pre-order beta this weekend. The beta should do a good job of keeping fans occupied while they wait for the new trailer to drop on August 22.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches September 19 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X.
