A video has been released that shows what Morrowind, the classic RPG from Bethesda that originally dropped in 2002, looks like when running with RTX. Late last year, Nvidia discussed its RTX Remix modding tool, a piece of upcoming software that allows modders to bring ray tracing technologies to older games, and it looks as though some people have already been utilizing it. Given how beloved titles from back in the day are now looking dated, there will be plenty of fans curious to see what certain ones look like when modernized.

The Elder Scrolls 3 is such a game, and given that Morrowind turned 20 years old in 2022, the vanilla release, impressive though it still is in terms of its scope, is definitely showing its age. Even Skyrim, which launched in 2011, is visually degrading, and this is where the modding community comes into its own with plenty of graphical improvements. But it's with the third entry in the long-running RPG series that the difference can really be seen.

In a recent YouTube video from user ALG46, Morrowind has been given the power of RTX Remix with features such as the aforementioned ray tracing effect and Nvidia's DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling, upscaling AI. The results are quite something as this two-decade-old game, while still maintaining its general looks, now has much more gorgeous lighting and shadows. The upscaling tech seems to have added more detail to the textures and character models, and while it still definitely looks like a game that came out 20 years ago, this mod absolutely gives it a visual leg up. The only downside, according to the user, is the mod only works for the interior locations of the game.

Given that it came out at the turn of the millennia, there may be some gamers who ask themselves whether it's worth playing Morrowind these days. There's no denying that, when compared to the current gaming climate, Bethesda's celebrated release doesn't look as pretty as the games that came after it, but it's still a classic role-playing game with a unique look and the in-depth lore that the franchise is known for.

Of course, when it comes to the fantasy series, Skyrim is generally the most popular Elder Scrolls title. It's certainly the one that many will immediately think about, but there will be plenty of fans out there who fondly recall the earlier installments. This video shows the power that modern technology has when it comes to older games, but it also shows how people are willing to look back at the classics and give them some extra love.

Morrowind released in 2002 for PC and the original Xbox.
