Morbius' very own Tyrese Gibson has recently put out some major proclamations regarding the upcoming film. While being interviewed, he was blatantly asked if Sony's Morbius is a part of the MCU. Gibson replied with a confident yes. He was then asked to confirm further, to clarify that Morbius is a part of the Avengers world - to which he replied flat out, yes, again.

Gibson seemed very certain of his claims about Morbiusworld fitting somewhere into the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe, which he made during an interview with ComicBook.com. However, the distributor of the film, Sony, publicly denied that Morbius was at all a playing factor in the MCU. However, there is no question as to whether or not the film takes inspiration from the MCU. The official film synopsis reads, “Biochemist Michael Morbius tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but when his experiment goes wrong, he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead.”

The character of Morbius was taken from the original Marvel comics, which may have been many fans' first introduction to him. The storyline and essence of the character of Morbius stemmed from Sony announcing that they were going to be producing a franchise of Spider-Man-inspired films. The very first trailer that dropped for Morbius featured graffiti declaring that Spider-Man was a murderer. This could be a potential nod towards the ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home when Peter Parker is framed for a murder, which suggests Marvel Studios' MCU and the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters are connected somehow, despite the latter company's denial.

The Spider-Man franchise has been rumored to be indefinitely dipping its lens into the vast multiverse. This makes Sony’s definitive "no" as to whether Morbius is at all a part of the MCU a bit confusing - especially since strong connections between Sony’s hero-themed project is somewhat inevitable. To further confuse and entangle the situation, Gibson also mentioned that the film was set to debut in October, which Sony also denied. Perhaps this is caused by miscommunication or a lack of information about just how both Sony and Marvel overlap, and to what extent.

Yet, the absence of coordination and coexistence is a bit strange considering it seems both parties are correct in some way. The premiere date originally attached to the film did, in fact, get pushed back. On the other hand, it was not by a matter of months, as Gibson had stated.

Whatever Marel Studios and Sony have planned for their respective movie worlds remains to be seen, but fans may have more answers once Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters. The President of Sony Pictures Entertainment recently suggested there was a plan to connect the Spider-Man franchises of Marvel and Sony that would be clear after audiences see No Way Home.

Morbius will now be released on January 28th, 2022.
