This article contains spoilers for episode 3 of Moon Knight. After traveling to Egypt in order to prevent the resurrection of Ammit, the latest Moon Knight episode focuses more on Marc Spector and the relationships he has with those around him. In a failed attempt to convince the other gods to side with Khonshu’s plight, Marc, Steven, and Layla are now on their own against Arthur Harrow and his cult, putting the heroes in a difficult position at the halfway point of the series.

Although Steven and Marc are beginning to figure out how they can work together, they’ve still got a long way to go before they can take down the larger-than-life forces threatening to destroy life as they know it. With only three episodes left, Moon Knight continues to take fans on a journey like no other, as the series explores uncharted territory in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Madripoor

Although Moon Knight has kept itself pretty distanced from the rest of the MCU thus far, the series has now made two references to the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In episode 3, it's revealed that Layla has been to Madripoor, the same place where Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes met up with Sharon Carter, where she set up her roots as the Power Broker.

Although the project is still pretty far away, Captain America 4 is in the works at Marvel Studios, so Moon Knight could be preparing fans for something bigger in the future. Although Steven and Marc are dealing with some pretty massive otherworldly forces, their story is still grounded on Earth at this point in time, just like Sam and Bucky. A collaboration between the new Cap, reformed Hydra agent, and ex-mercenary/gift shop owner would make for an interesting story in Captain America 4.

An Audience With The Gods

Episode 3 drew on more Moon Knight's comic book origins, introducing the other Egyptian gods through their Avatars, while putting Arthur Harrow on trial. The additional gods, including Horus, Isis, and Osiris (who all appeared during this week’s installment of the series) made their original debut in the Marvel Comics.

Khonshu also pleads with his fellow gods to leave the comfort of their home known as the Overvoid, which is where the Egyptian gods live separate from the human world. The Overvoid existed in the Marvel Comics, as well, confirming that these Egyptian beings have created a place where they can forgo the responsibilities of preserving human life. In a way, the Overvoid is the Egyptian version of Asgard, where the gods live according to their own rules.

The Unexpected Guest

After waking up to find himself covered in blood with a knife in his hand, Marc Spector takes control of his shared body to see dead bodies surrounding him. Immediately, he assumes it’s Steven’s doing, but after realizing that neither of them were responsible for committing the murders, it becomes glaringly obvious that there may be a third identity present without their knowledge.

Fans who have read the Moon Knight comics know that besides Marc Spector, Steven Grant and Khonshu, cab driver Jake Lockley is also inhabiting Moon Knight’s body with the other men. Although it’s unclear whether Lockley is responsible for the unsolicited killings that took place in episode 3, fans are suspecting that he’ll be making his appearance at some point during the series.

Midnight Man

So far, every episode of Moon Knight has introduced a side character inspired by someone from the comics. This week’s chosen one is Anton Mogart. Episode 3 revealed that Mogart also has connections to whatever happened with Layla in Madripoor, and he seems to be up to no good in the show, as well.

Mogart has a reputation in the comics as a skilled thief, but he typically makes his move around midnight, which is how he earned the name of Midnight Man. Layla has confirmed a few times throughout the show that she’s not opposed to stealing in order to pay the bills, while simultaneously saving the world, so it’s not unreasonable to assume that she and Mogart organized a heist together in Madripoor.

The Statue of Khonshu

After using the stars to locate Ammit’s burial site, the other Egyptian gods imprison Khonshu in stone for his interference with human affairs. The end of episode 3 shows that he’s been turned into a small statue, which bears some connections to the comics.

Marc Spector originally died beneath a statue of Khonshu, before being resurrected and transformed into the god’s avatar. Although much smaller, the statue keeping Khonshu trapped in the Moon Knight series is similar to the statue Marc found in the comics, and is quite possibly a nod to the important role this statue played in Moon Knight’s story.
