The Wildspire Waste in Monster Hunter: World is the second major area a new hunter will be able to explore. It's mostly desert wasteland with several large water sources, and a few areas with fertile growth where special monsters will spawn.

Some monsters that appear in the Ancient Forest also appear in the Wildspire Waste (and vice versa). Players new to the game will encounter most of these large foes for the first time here. The area is generally more difficult, but the most difficult foes in the Wildspire Waste (without the Iceborne DLC) are on par with the Rathalos' difficulty in the Ancient Forest.

9 Kulu-Ya-Ku

Monster Hunter World Player Gets Impressive Double Kill - Kulu Ya Ku

The Kulu-Ya-Ku is a large monster that can be found in both the Ancient Forest and the Wildspire Waste, though players will generally find it in the Wildspire Waste first. True to its nature, the Kulu-Ya-Ku will dart around the map looking for eggs to steal.

This monster has relatively low health compared to other large monsters in Monster Hunter: World. Don't take it too easy, though. Its pecking attacks can rapidly wear down an inattentive hunter.

8 Jyuratodus

The Jyuratodus is the first major water-faring large monster that players will face in Monster Hunter: World. Generally found in the three water-logged areas of the map, the Jyuratodus attacks with water and mud-based moves as well as a small variety of powerful slams.

The Jyuratodus is intimidating and packs a punch. Still, its projectile attacks are extremely easy to dodge, and it can be knocked over during one of its recovery animations.

7 Pukei-Pukei

The Pukei-Pukei is normally only found in the Ancient Forest. However, when the Hunter successfully guides Zorah Magdaros for the first time, one will spark a quest in the Wildspire Waste. It has poison-based attacks and surprisingly long reach with both its tail and tongue.

As long as the Hunter has antidotes or makes an effort to cut off the Pukei-Pukei's tongue/tail, it's an easy one to take down. Don't underestimate this monster's strength, though, especially in high rank.

6 Barroth

barroth intro from monster hunter world

The Barroth is a hulking golem of a monster that patrols the rocky areas and alcoves of the Wildspire Waste. It hits like a ton of bricks and moves faster than most hunters expect, but melee weapons can break its head and armor with relative ease.

The Barroth has a lot of health and will chain attacks together, especially as it gets weaker. It's not necessarily hard to take down, but it isn't a walk in the park either.

5 Anjanath

The Anjanath is the iconic fiery Tyrannosaurus Rex-like monster originally found in the Ancient Forest. This beast can be found in the Wildspire Waste after successfully guiding Zorah Magdaros. The wide-open terrain of the area favors the creature, which uses wide-ranging firebreathing attacks as well as targeted, dextrous movements.

It's one of the more fearsome foes in the game, especially for the column of fire it breathes out every so often which can one-shot unprepared hunters. Be sure to bring some fire resistance gear and get away from it when its neck starts pulsing with flame.

4 Rathian

Rathian

The Rathian is the partner wyvern to the Rathalos of the Ancient Forest. Players can find the Rathian first in Wildspire Waste or in Ancient Forest. In the Waste, it tends to hang out near the Diablos den in the northern part of the map.

The Rathian is a nimble, powerful foe that often flies above the hunter to avoid melee attacks. Ranged weapons are much more effective against this foe, but patient hunters can whittle down its health on the ground if they can dodge its fast attacks.

3 Bazelgeuse

Monster Hunter Bazelgeuse Resting

The Bazelgeuse is first encountered in the Wildspire Waste, though it can be found in several areas. It flies high above the terrain and rains down sharp, exploding rocks that embed themselves in the ground and living things that get caught. Players will know there's a Bazelgeuse nearby if you can hear rapid explosions preceded by a sky-high roar.

Once it lands, the Bazelgeuse has several body parts that can be broken or severed. However, its blast attacks make prolonged close combat difficult. Take a Bazelgeuse on at range for the best chance to defeat this terrifying wyvern.

2 2Deviljho

Monster Hunter World Quest Could Tease Deviljho - Deviljho

The Deviljho is a bit of a trickster monster. It shows up all across Monster Hunter: World in the middle of quests and can singlehandedly prevent a hunter from finishing a mission in the time limit. It's a monster that fights everything it sees – and can hurl dead large monsters around as weapons.

The Deviljho was added to Monster Hunter: World shortly after the game's original release. It's since become a fan favorite in part because it can whittle down other large monsters before the hunter starts their engagement.

1 Diablos

Diablos are one of the most intimidating monsters in Monster Hunter: World found chiefly in the Wildspire Waste. During the quest to become the Apex predator (in which the hunter must kill a Rathalos and a Diablos) it can be found in its nest at the north end of the map.

It's fast, it's ridiculously powerful, it can catch up to a fleeing hunter at a moment's notice. It's one of the few enemies that many players consider to be tougher than the Deviljho, barring Iceborne DLC monsters.
