With Monster Hunter World releasing on January 26, many longtime fans cannot wait to get their hands on the game; however, since a main title hasn’t released on consoles since 2012, many newcomers may be joining other hunters. Although this game isn’t coming to a portable device yet (not even the Nintendo Switch), it will likely receive a large reception, so here are some tips for less seasoned hunters.

The following tips are composed of combat, resource gathering, crafting, exploring, and endgame tips. Since Monster Hunter World revolves around these key features, knowledge of each beforehand will most likely help newcomers. As far as combat goes, gamers should keep the following in mind:

  • Each hunt is essentially a boss fight, so go prepared and knowledgeable about the mark.
  • Observe a monster’s behavior during combat! They do not have health bars, but they do have telltale signs of death: limping, deep breathing, or even trying to nap.
  • Understand equipped weapons: each is unique, which adds a lot of variety to combat.
  • Use SOS Signals! There is strength in numbers.
  • Trapmaking is highly helpful, as Pitfall traps and electric traps can lead to weak spot openings.
  • Utilize the Palico, even if it’s just as a distraction. Utilize the slinger, especially as a distraction.
  • There are three attempts at every hunt; learn from mistakes.

A key advantage to combat can be gained by gathering resources and crafting. As far are those are concerned, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Be mindful of the carrying capacity – take only what is needed and loot as much as possible.
  • Upgrade weapons and craft armor as often as possible – but only if it’s needed.
  • Check in at the Resource Control center often, as its quests often contain good rewards.
  • For good early to mid-game armor, dig through bone piles. Bone armor is a good option.
  • Complete as many town upgrades and optional quests as possible, as it can prove rare items, gems, and materials.
  • After unlocking the Botanical Research center, visit often for materials for potion crafting.
  • The Elder Melder is great for combining items; just don’t sacrifice needed materials.
  • Resources can be farmed by fast traveling to a camp and returning to the area.
  • Investigations will also provide good resources.

Of course, exploration benefits the above a lot. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Scout flies can highlight resources and footprints.
  • Research points are earned by tracking footprints, finding valuable materials, and cutting parts off monsters.
  • After discovering a monster, open the map and stick it with a pin. This will make tracking a lot easier.
  • Once discovered, resources appear on the map. Farm!
  • Environmental hazards can be advantageous; be mindful of your surroundings.
  • Utilize the fast travel system; there is no penalty, and it saves precious time.

Once you’ve reached the endgame, armor sets will begin to come in a variety of styles. Find something that fits your style, as you prepare to take on Elder Dragons (a recent video of Nergigante proves it may be needed.) Also, avoid the one-hit abilities which are punishing if you get tagged (avoid that too!). Utilize these tips, consumables, and the terrain when combating these beasts.

With time, patience, and preparation, these tips may help turn a newcomer into a grizzled veteran; for gamers still on the fence about picking up Monster Hunter World, be sure to check out the reviews!
