Highlights

  • Monster Hunter Wilds was announced at The Game Awards 2023 and is slated to launch in 2025, putting it quite far away. There may not be much new information about Wilds in 2024 as a result.
  • Capcom is likely going to be focusing on promoting Dragon's Dogma 2, its big 2024 game.
  • Wilds' 2025 release window gives it plenty of development time and Monster Hunter's recent history suggests that demos can be expected before launch.

Monster Hunter Wilds was a surprise announcement at The Game Awards 2023 despite Capcom’s modern Monster Hunter release pattern suggesting that it could’ve been any day until an official reveal. Seeing only a brief amount of gameplay was a bit concerning when compared to how much was displayed in Monster Hunter World’s E3 2017 reveal, but this then made sense when the release window of 2025 appeared at the end of Wilds’ teaser.

That puts it out fairly far from now, and depending on when in 2025 it is intended to launch could mean that not much more is learned about Wilds in 2024. There are reasons to expect Wilds popping up here and there next year under certain circumstances, particularly at the end of 2024, but for the most part it is likely that the Monster Hunter franchise will have a quiet 2024 and a booming 2025 aside from the possibility of early surprises.

Monster Hunter Wilds Needs to Wait for Dragon’s Dogma 2 to Release

Right now, Capcom likely wants to keep concentration on Dragon’s Dogma 2 until it releases at the end of March. Because Dragon’s Dogma 2 is its big 2024 game, it makes sense if that’s where all marketing attention rests while Monster Hunter can go back to development in peace following Wilds’ announcement and reveal at The Game Awards 2023.

There’s no need for an immediate follow-up now that gameplay footage has been shown for fans to mull over; meanwhile, Dragon’s Dogma 2 can take center stage. Wilds has no reason to begin pre-release marketing this spring either way, but it seems fair to presume that nothing more will be shown or shared until Dragon’s Dogma 2 is already out and has had time to simmer before drawing all attention to the current-gen iteration of Monster Hunter.

Monster Hunter Wilds’ 2025 Release Window Means It Can Safely Dodge 2024

Wilds having any pre-release marketing in 2024 may be fully dependent on when precisely in 2025 it is releasing. Indeed, while 2025 seems like a generous and cozy window for Capcom to fulfill, there is also the chance it needs to be delayed for some reason, which could ensure that fans see even less of it in 2024, if at all. 2025’s release window gives Wilds more than enough time in the oven, at least compared to how soon World was released after its announcement at E3 2017, and thus Wilds will likely hit its 2025 window without fear of delay unless something unforeseen occurs.

That said, World did start unveiling new trailers only a couple of months after its announcement trailer, and marketing for Wilds may not be too far off after the launch of Dragon’s Dogma 2 if Capcom plans to do the same for World ’s current-gen successor, though the further release window suggests that will not come to pass.

Monster Hunter Wilds Could Have Preceding Demos Like World Did

World was released on consoles at the beginning of 2018, but a month before, in 2017, Capcom had a couple of beta demos available for players to experience the game. World also had a beta demo the same month of release, rounding that out to three total opportunities to get hands-on time with abridged slices of the game before it launched. Nothing is suggesting that Wilds will release in January and parallel World identically in that way, but if it was to there would be a chance that players have Wilds demos to try out at the tail-end of 2024.
