While a teaser is all that is known of Monster Hunter Wilds so far, it already has something in common with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds showed off a new world, new creatures, and most importantly, a new monster companion for the player. While there is still a lot to be discovered about the game, most notably its story and how the gameplay will differ from past titles, players should already be prepared for at least one new part of the experience.

As the latest installment of Capcom's Monster Hunter franchise, Monster Hunter Wilds will have some big shoes to fill. Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise were both massive games that showed off the best of the series. Not only that, but earlier this year, the mobile spin-off Monster Hunter Now brought a new dimension to the series' gameplay. In fact, the incredible momentum behind the series is likely why the reveal of Monster Hunter Wilds was chosen as the final trailer for The Game Awards 2023. The Monster Hunter name is very valuable at the moment, so the reveal would naturally draw attention.

An open world is the best way for Monster Hunter Wilds to build on the series' current trend of building on exploration mechanics.

The most notable part of Monster Hunter Wilds' reveal trailer was the monster that the lead character was riding throughout. With a lizard-like body and feathery plumage, it was one of the more eye-catching aspects of the trailer. From the looks of things, it seems to be the player's companions, similar to the Palicoes and Palamutes from past games. This creature's reptilian and avian aspects, as well as the abilities it showed in the trailer, are set to make it a more unique addition, though. It should be interesting to see what role this new creature will play in Monster Hunter Wilds as a whole.

Monster Hunter Rise debuted the ability to temporarily ride and control monsters in battle, but players couldn't have one as a companion.

Monter Hunter Wilds' new steed invites comparisons to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's box Legendaries, Koraidon and Miraidon. The player received their respective box legendary early, and it would be a constant companion for them. They could ride it to move faster, and it also had the ability to make some impressive jumps, swim, or even fly. It was a dynamic that hadn't been used for any previous Legendary in the series, and it proved to be highly effective. Koraidon and Miraidon ended up being two of the most memorable and likable box Legendaries that the Pokemon series has seen in generations, largely due to this gimmick.

It remains to be seen how similar Monster Hunter Wilds' new companion will be. After all, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's stories featured their respective Legendaries in a prominent role. Since Monster Hunter Wilds was only just announced, there's no indication at all of what direction its story could go. However, if the ridable monster is as prominent in the game as it was in the trailer, it's easy to picture it being involved somehow. Plus, it's nice to see a companion monster that isn't in the same vein as past examples. Whatever its role ends up being, there's good reason to expect something interesting.

The new feathered friend that players will meet in Monster Hunter Wilds is worth theorizing about. It may be the closest thing to having Koraidon and Miraidon in Monster Hunter that players will ever see. At least if the game follows what the trailer implies, it should be a loyal steed that will work wonders in helping the player get around the deserts of Monster Hunter Wilds. While fans have only gotten a tiny glimpse of the creature so far, Monster Hunter Wilds' new companion seems pretty similar to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's lovable legendaries.
