Highlights

  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's new species could inspire Monster Hunter Wilds' monster roster, creating a fresh impact for the game.
  • Monster Hunter Wilds must establish its own identity with unique gameplay features, like the new setting and mount shown in the trailer.
  • Incorporating traits from Pokemon like Kilowattrel, Klawf, and Baxcalibur could add depth and excitement to Monster Hunter Wilds encounters.

The latest generation of Pokemon includes several species that could be a great inspiration for the designers of Monster Hunter Wilds. Since Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are the latest games in the series, their additions to the Pokedex are likely to be fresh in most players' minds. At the same time, many of the new introductions proved quite impressive. Monster Hunter Wilds should hope that the game's new monsters form a strong enough roster to make a similar impact.

Monster Hunter Wilds's initial trailer provided plenty of hype that the full game will hopefully live up to. Just like how Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's gameplay gimmicks helped to form its identity, Monster Hunter Wilds needs to do something to establish itself. So far, the new setting and mount have provided a pair of interesting hooks to build off. However, as a Monster Hunter title, one of the most important deciding factors will be the quality of the monsters in-game.

Monster Hunter Wilds Should 'Steal' a Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Traversal Feature

Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds could spice up its world by adding one unique traversal feature from Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Paldea's Pokemon Include Some Great Options For Monster Hunter Wilds' Monster Roster

Kilowattrel Could Be Turned Into a Shocking Bird Monster

Kilowattrel is a bird Pokemon with a talent that would make other birds steer clear. It generates electrical energy by flapping its wings, which it can expel in the form of powerful attacks. This is a trait that could be incorporated to devastating effect if one of the monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds has access to it. A bird that could swoop in and deliver a blast of electricity has serious potential, and the idea could expand Monster Hunter Wilds' selection of raptors.

Monster Hunter Wilds Could Show Off an Ambush Predator Like Klawf

Shown off early in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's promotional material, Klawf is exactly what it looks like. A big, rocky desert-dwelling crab, Klawf hits hard and has a tough hide to absorb physical damage in its own right. In addition, its stated ability to hang from ceilings and ambush targets could be mixed in to make its encounters more threatening, especially if players encounter it in caves. It would bring an exciting twist to Monster Hunter Wilds' combat if nothing else.

Klawf's ability to cling to ceilings is similar to tactics shown off by Khezu and Tobi-Kadachi in recent Monster Hunter titles, making it a valid tactic in-game.

Baxcalibur Could Be the Scourge of Monster Hunter Wilds' Tundras

As an aggressive ice dragon, Baxcalibur is focused on raw damage output. Not only does it have chilling breath, but it also has a razor-sharp fin on its back that it is more than happy to introduce in the heat of a fight. In fact, its signature move, Glaive Rush—which deals massive damage but leaves it vulnerable afterward—resembles many high-risk, high-reward attacks from Monster Hunter. Monster Hunter Wilds could find plenty of use for a dragon like Baxcalibur.

Monster Hunter's Next Big Aquatic Specimen Could Draw Inspiration From Dondozo

Dondozo is an absurdly large catfish that is one of the biggest Pokemon in existence, and it could also inspire a new gimmick in Monster Hunter Wilds. Dondozo is huge and bulky, but it gains its true power when the diminutive Tatsugiri jumps into its mouth. A giant catfish is an interesting idea for a monster on its own, but one that works in tandem with another monster could bring a new dimension to how Monster Hunter Wilds designs its creatures.

A Monster Based on Kingambit Could Become a Big Problem in Monster Hunter Wilds

Kingambit took an already-intimidating Pokemon in Bisharp and took its fearsome traits to the next level. Resembling a cross between a beetle and a samurai, Kingambit fights with a massive blade mounted on its head. A monster matching Kingambit's own strength and style may require a mighty build in Monster Hunter to overcome. Kingambit's aggression and dangerous design are traits that Monster Hunter Wilds could combine to make a monster as fearsome as Monster Hunter Rise's Magnamalo, at least.
