The Case for Monster Hunter Wilds to Have New Weapon Types

Monster Hunter’s main weapon roster has been static for a long time, but Monster Hunter Wilds has the chance to add something new to the mix.

While several fan favorites seem to appear in almost every game, some are less well-known. With Monster Hunter Wilds announced, many fans are making their wishlists of monsters to appear in the game. But aside from the old favorites and inevitable new monsters, a few underappreciated monsters deserve a chance to shine.

1 Seltas

A Cool And Challenging Foe

Seltas from Monster Hunter 4
  • Class: Neopteron
  • Generation: Fourth
  • Debut Game: Monster Hunter 4

While Monster Hunter is most famous for its dragon and dinosaur-like enemies, its insectoid and arachnoid monsters are popular as well. While the bigger Seltas Queen is more popular, Seltas deserves some love for its cool design and challenging fight. It nearly constantly hovers, quickly changing its position and charging at the player with its massive horn.

Said horn is likely the first thing most players will notice about this impressive insectoid monster. It provides some of the coolest armor in the game, making the player look like a robot from a mecha anime. With its challenging fight and cool-looking rewards, Seltas will surely be welcome in Wilds.

2 Monoblos

Monoblos from Monster Hunter
  • Class: Flying Wyvern
  • Generation: First
  • Debut Game: Monster Hunter

Monoblos debuted in the first game and were introduced as rivals for the similarly named and designed Diablos. However, while Diablos went on to be one of the most popular monsters in the series, even appearing in the live-action movie, Monoblos has gone largely forgotten by the fans.

The Argument for Monster Hunter Wilds to Be a Full-Blown Open-World Game

An open world is the best way for Monster Hunter Wilds to build on the series' current trend of building on exploration mechanics.

This is a shame since Monoblos’ ceratopsian design and long horn help make it one of the most visually striking monsters in the series. A new game would be a perfect opportunity to reinvigorate interest in this monster. If Wilds is open-world like many expect, territorial disputes between Monoblos and Diablos would make for thrilling set pieces.

3 Dodogama

A Surprisingly Adorable Monster

Dodogama from Monster Hunter World
  • Class: Fanged Wyvern
  • Generation: Fifth
  • Debut Game: Monster Hunter World

With its squat appearance and massive underbite, Dodogama is one of the most adorable monsters in the entire series. No wonder that it has an official plushie. It also helps that it’s described as being one of the more docile creatures in the series.

Despite its cute appearance and gentle nature, Dodogama is still capable of spitting explosive rocks at the player, making it an adorable menace. With fans loving it despite its limited number of appearances, Monster Hunter Wilds would be an excellent entry to bring Dodogama back.

4 Malfestio

A Devious Creature With A Unique Design

Malfestio from Monster Hunter Generations
  • Class: Bird Wyvern
  • Generation: Fourth
  • Debut Game: Monster Hunter Generations

Most Bird Wyverns usually have one of two body types, but Malfestio has a unique design. The monster appears as a giant owl with a striking jester motif. This appearance suits its ability to inflict sleep and confusion on the player.

Malfestio helps remind players just how terrifying owls can be, especially with its ability to instantly snap its head 180 degrees on sneaky players trying to attack from behind. Such a cool and scary design is too good to not be used in more games.

5 Velocidrome

A Classic Monster Who Gets No Respect

Velocidrome from Monster hunter stories 2
  • Class: Bird Wyvern
  • Generation: First
  • Debut Game: Monster Hunter

Velocidrome is one of Monster Hunter’s earliest monsters, even appearing in the first game’s opening movie. The Velocidrome has an incredibly appealing appearance, with its blue body, yellow beak, and red crest. But because it's usually the first monster the player encounters, they’re usually seen as jobbers.

While that isn’t an unfair assessment, it’s a shame that the creature hasn’t made many appearances in the modern mainline games. Notably, Velocidrome is absent from World and Rise. With its cool appearance and long history in the games, Wilds should bring this old favorite back.

6 Zamtrios

A Versatile Monster With An Awesome Design

Zamtrios from Monster Hunter Stories 2
  • Class: Amphibian
  • Generation: Fourth
  • Debut Game: Monster Hunter 4

Looking like a cross between a frog and a shark, Zamtrios unsurprisingly has its share of fans. It’s also able to dramatically alter its appearance, which makes it even cooler. It can inflate its body like a balloon, or coat itself in awesome-looking ice armor.

Playing as a shark is rare in video games. Regardless, these titles allow players experience the thrill of playing as the aquatic creature.

Despite its cool looks and versatility, Zamtrios often goes overlooked. It’s only appeared in a handful of games, with its smaller cousins the Zamites making more appearances. Wilds would be the perfect place for Zamtrios to make its much-needed comeback.

7 Gammoth

An Awesome Monster With A Unique Inspiration

A Hunter trembling beside a roaring Gammoth in Monster Hunter Generations on 3DS
  • Class: Fanged Beast
  • Generation: Fourth
  • Debut Game: Monster Hunter Generations

Even in the rare instances that a monster doesn’t resemble a dragon or dinosaur, it’s usually still modeled after a carnivore. Most herbivore monsters in the series are portrayed as weak. Gammoth bucks this trend by being based on a wooly mammoth and being one of the strongest monsters in Monster Hunter Generations.

Gammoth is popular for being a completely different-looking monster, representing the often-overlooked Fanged Beast class, and being a rare specifically female monster. Despite this, she’s yet to appear in a mainline game outside of Generations and Generations Ultimate. Wilds would be an excellent place to end this unfortunate trend.

8 Banbaro

A Cult Favorite Who Deserves To Be In More Games

Hunting Banbaro
  • Class: Brute Wyvern
  • Generation: Fifth
  • Debut Game: Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

When Monster Hunter fans hear the term “Brute Wyvern,” they reasonably expect something that looks like a Tyrannosaurus Rex. While Banbaro certainly has theropod features, it subverts the expected Brute Wyvern look with its moose and reindeer-like qualities. This helped it stand out and gain a huge fanbase despite only appearing in the expansion of one mainline game.

Even though it’s a recent monster, Banbaro’s awesome design and challenging fight make it worthy of far more than just a single appearance. Wilds would be an excellent opportunity to bring it back. With its presumably wide open world, it would be interesting to see how a creature as unique as Banbaro fits into the Monster Hunter ecosystem.

9 Paolumu

An Adorable-Yet-Scary Design Too Good To Let Go

A Paolumu from Monster Hunter World
  • Class: Flying Wyvern
  • Generation: Fifth
  • Debut Game: Monster Hunter World

Another monster that’s a welcome break from the usual dragons and dinosaurs, Paolumu is a Flying Wyvern shaped like a bat. Its round and fluffy appearance makes it look adorable. But when provoked, it makes a nightmarish expression that would make even a Khezu jump a little.

What to Expect from Monster Hunter Wilds in 2024

Monster Hunter Wilds seems quite far away with a release window of 2025 and may not have dedicated marketing until late in 2024, if at all next year.

Creatures that straddle the line between cute and scary are always popular in video games and Paolumu is no exception. Fans have wanted the fluffy bat to make a return to mainline games, and Wilds provides Capcom with an excellent means of fulfilling that wish.

10 Lagiacrus

An Awesome Flagship Monster Who’s Been Underused

Lagiacrus from Monster Hunter
  • Class: Leviathan
  • Generation: Third
  • Debut Game: Monster Hunter 3

Most flagship monsters like Rathalos, Tigrex, Zinogre, and Nargacuga are extremely popular and are all but guaranteed a spot in a mainline Monster Hunter game. A notable exception to this rule is the Leviathan monster Lagiacrus. Despite its awesome sea serpent appearance and incredible thunder abilities, Lagiacrus’ mainline appearances have been few and far between.

Though one could argue its scarcity is due to Monster Hunter moving away from swimming mechanics, it still appeared in Generations with no swimming. And other Leviathan monsters like Royal Ludroth and Mizutsune have thrived without underwater levels. With Wilds appearing to offer a varied landscape, it would be appropriate to bring back the lord of the seas.
