  • Preorder bonuses and discounts available for Monster Hunter Stories 2 on Steam and Switch.

Capcom just made a surprise announcement that Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, a game it had released originally for the Nintendo Switch and PC, is coming to PlayStation—but to PS4, not PS5. It's certainly not a bad choice as Monster Hunter Stories 2 was hailed as one of the best RPGs the year it was released, but fans were definitely not expecting the game to not come to a current-gen console.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a spinoff in the popular Monster Hunter franchise, which released in 2021 after Monster Hunter Rise earlier that year. It differs from the original action RPG formula by being a more classic-style turn-based JRPG. Despite not being a major installment in the series, it was dropped to good reviews, with more hardcore fans highly recommending it to those who got into Monster Hunter via bigger games such as Rise and World.

Predicting Monster Hunter Wilds' New Gimmick

Monster Hunter Wilds is doing something new with the series’ gameplay, but the teases for what that is point in several different directions.

Monster Hunter developer and publisher Capcom made the big announcement in its Capcom Highlights stream on March 11. The company revealed that both the Monster Hunter Stories 2, as well as the remastered original Monster Hunter Stories (which had first released on 3DS) will be coming to PS4 as a collection on June 14, 2024. Fans who preorder the game will get a special bonus Kamura Maiden outfit for Ena, and those who have an existing Monster Hunter Rise save will also get additional perks and items. There will also be a deluxe edition of the game with even more bonuses.

What Do Fans Think of This Monster Hunter Stories 2 Announcement?

After Capcom had revealed that Monster Hunter Stories 2 was coming to PS4 but not PS5, fans took to social media to express some slight confusion. Some with PS5s are wondering why the current-gen platform was bypassed, but there are also more fans who expressed excitement for the PS4 release regardless. One Twitter user commented that the PS4 hardware would be a perfect spot for the game to bring back its anime-influenced art style. Since there seem to still be a lot of gamers who remain on PS4, Monster Hunter Stories 2 coming to the platform is a good opportunity to try something different, especially for those who are looking for an experience similar to Pokemon outside the Switch.

But for those who are already excited and can't wait, Capcom has permanently discounted Monster Hunter Stories 2 on Steam and Switch. The game is now retailing for only $39.99, and that's before any other promos on top of it, like the Capcom Publisher Sale that's running until March 21, 2024 on Steam. For those who have played enough of Rise and are already waiting for Monster Hunter Wilds in 2025, Monster Hunter Stories 2 is definitely worth taking time for.
