Capcom held a livestreamed Monster Hunter digital event this week to further unveil information regarding two upcoming Monster Hunter games: Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. The former is headed to the Switch on March 26, 2021, and the latter will be arriving on Switch and Steam in July 2021. A boatload of new details have surfaced regarding both titles, but many fans were excited to hear about the first title update for Monster Hunter Rise that would include a returning monster named Chameleos.
The first free update will be coming one month after the launch of the game and will include several "new" monsters and some other features/improvements. For those wondering just what the heck Chameleos is and where it's from, here's what Monster Hunter fans need to know.
First Appearance
Chameleos has been part of the Monster Hunter franchise for about 15 years now, as this Elder Dragon was first introduced in the Japanese release of Monster Hunter 2 back in 2006 for the PlayStation 2. Old-school Western Monster Hunter fans didn't get to fight against this beast until Monster Hunter Freedom 2 released on the PSP one year later in 2007, which was sort of an updated portable version of Monster Hunter 2, but not exactly a straight port. And it's most recent appearance was in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, otherwise known as Monster Hunter XX in Japan.
Capcom showed a quick glimpse of the monster in Monster Hunter Rise, and like in the previous games, the monster has the power to turn itself invisible by using camouflage. In past games, Chameleos could also use their breath to create a mist to protect themselves against hunters' attacks and it also impairs the visibility of players. It also has a long tongue that can steal items from players, but that hasn't been confirmed for Rise just yet. This monster also has the ability to lower the defense and stamina of players by using acid blobs and toxic gas.
Chameleos' Weaknesses
As far as its elemental typing, Chameleos has been known to have two different ones. In its first appearance, it was a Dragon-type, but in later games, it turned into a Water-type. So, if the monster continues to stay as a Water-type, hunters can use weapons with Thunder or Dragon elements to deal some extra damage. It's also worth noting that hunters will be able to sever its tail and break their wings and horn.
Seeing as this monster is able to cause so many ailments to hunters and is considered to be an Elder Dragon, it will definitely be a formidable challenge for even the most experienced hunter of monsters. Chameleos will come to Monster Hunter Rise in April via a new update. Hopefully, Capcom throws in some new elements into Chameleos' combat pattern in order to give veteran players a somewhat new experience.
Monster Hunter Rise is set to launch for the Nintendo Switch on March 26, 2021. A PC version of the game will come to Steam sometime in 2022.
