In an era where dinosaur games are few and far between, the Monster Hunter franchise stands far above the rest. Though technically not actually dinosaurs, many of the monster species in the Monster Hunter universe feature designs inspired by or directly based on a breed of dinosaur. As the series has become increasingly popular over the years, the interest in these monster designs has also grown. In spite of this, there have still been very few dinosaur games being developed by major studios. In a time when fans of dinosaur games have little to look forward to, Instinction offers a glimmer of hope.

Instinction is an upcoming action-adventure game from New Zealand-based developer Hashbane Interactive. Claiming to have been directly inspired by Capcom's Dino Crisis series, Instinction will allow players to explore an open-world prehistoric environment filled to the brim with vicious dinosaurs. The development team also credits games like Turok, Tomb Raider, Alien: Isolation, and the Jurassic Park game Trespasser as sources of inspiration. Instinction is said to feature a single-player story as well as cooperative play for up to three players, so those used to playing Monster Hunter with friends should take a look at what this game has to offer.

Why Capcom and Monster Hunter Should Take Notes From Instinction

Instinction game first person mode

Instinction is said to feature both first-person and third-person gameplay, though whether players can swap between modes in real time is unclear so far. The game's setting should include some familiar environments for Monster Hunter players, featuring mainly jungles and valleys. The story of the game centers around an ancient human civilization that coincided with dinosaurs in a lost valley in the Yucatan peninsula. As such, there will be ancient temples loaded with artifacts to collect and puzzles to solve. Like Capcom's Dino Crisis, there is also an element of time displacement in the story.

Though a different genre of game than Monster Hunter, Instinction should offer players who enjoy the character progression, exploration, and co-op combat elements of Monster Hunter a satisfying experience. It might also be interesting for Monster Hunter players to fight more realistic dinosaurs in life-like environments with real-world weaponry. The tone of Instinction seems to be more serious, with horror-esque moments and atmosphere. This shift of tone could provide a new challenge to players familiar with Monster Hunter's world. There is also said to be a variety of dinosaurs to fend off plus more coming post-launch in the form of DLC.

Aside from Frontier's Jurassic World Evolution series, the ARK series, and Capcom's newest IP, Exoprimal, there aren't many new dinosaur games being made. Instinction takes the approach that many fans have been longing for, which is a more serious take on dinosaurs. Dinosaurs can make for excellent antagonists when provided the proper atmosphere and tone to make them intimidating. Fans of Dino Crisis, Turok, Jurassic Park, or Monster Hunter should certainly pay attention to what Instinction is doing.

Seeing a AAA studio make a high-quality dinosaur game has been on many fans' wishlists for a long time. The most prominent of these dream games is a remake of Capcom's Dino Crisis. It would make sense for Capcom to remake Dino Crisis following the success of the Resident Evil remakes. The fan's desire for a remake has also been made clear for a long time now, but whether Capcom decides to develop another Dino Crisis is uncertain. In the meantime, fans can support games like Instinction which are attempting to fill the void. Though there is no official release date confirmed at this time, Instinction is said to have a demo coming soon.

Instinction is currently in development for PC.
