The 2021 Game Awards brought some promising reveals for gamers. There was a new Warhammer: Space Marine announced, a new gameplay trailer for Hellblade 2, and among many other things, a surprising first look at a Wonder Woman game. The trailer was short and though it didn't reveal any gameplay, fans have been eagerly awaiting more details to be announced by developer Monolith Productions.

Monolith Productions' previous Lord of the Rings games were well-received by both fans and critics when they made their way to gaming platforms. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War took fans of Tolkien's fantasy epic through a new experience. Besides allowing the player to slow down time, jump from great heights, and take part in combat that borrowed its style from the Batman Arkham games, one of the standout features of Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor was the Nemesis System.

The Nemesis System, which was controversially patented by Warner Bros., involved the player of either Middle-earth game to have unique enemies appear on the map, which would have randomly generated attributes and personalities. This brought a great deal of variety to Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, with some players finding their battles with their least favourite orc to be more engaging than the main of the game. There was even the option in Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War for the player to recruit their enemies, making their favourite randomly generated orcs their allies.

With the reveal of Wonder Woman, many fans of the Middle-earth games began to speculate whether the Nemesis System will be returning. Monolith has already confirmed that the mechanic will be returning for Wonder Woman, and a recent job listing seems to further confirm there will be borrowed mechanics from the Middle-earth titles. The job listing mentions "familiarity with Shadow of Mordor or Shadow of War games," as something that an ideal candidate would have, suggesting there will be a similarity between the Wonder Woman game and Monolith's previous titles.

Monolith has previously stated that the goal in Wonder Woman's version of the Nemesis System will be to "unite her Amazon family and the humans from the modern world," implying that again there will be the option to recruit enemies in Wonder Woman as well as beat up randomly generated enemies. Other mechanics from the Middle-earth games could be brought in as well, such as the combat system that could make Wonder Woman's combat similar to Batman Arkham.

The Nemesis System in Wonder Woman could again allow the player to take a more versatile approach to the main goals in the game, or, as some fear, it may not work as well as it does in Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. Only time will tell for sure.

Wonder Woman is currently in development.
