Completing a battle pass by the end of a season in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare can be a challenge. Player XP fluctuates each match, hackers bring K/D down, and many other issues make the journey long and difficult. Modern Warfare fans are given the option to purchase extra tiers, but every fan knows that the rewards feel much better when earned through battle.

One Modern Warfare fan has made an interesting discovery about how the battle pass XP total works. A popular fan theory is starting to build that player XP is being throttled throughout the season to try and promote purchasing tiers. Fans are claiming that the Double XP Weekend in Modern Warfare is a sham, and that fans are being tricked into buying bundles and skins through "clever marketing."

Multiple Reddit users have brought up the same accusations and theories. It all starts with the fact that the last few battle pass levels have an increased XP threshold making them slightly more difficult to grind through. The Reddit users claim that after every Tier Sale the Modern Warfare battle pass progression rate is throttled back to make it more difficult. Mixing this with their data on user playtimes, COD point freebies in the pass, and other information they allegedly try to make it seem like a good idea to just purchase the final tiers. Outside of the trickery in the purchasing, the users also claim that Double XP weekends are actually regular XP weekends because of the reduction from the Tier Sale.

In the comments, players are not as quick to accept this theory. Many say that the XP increase is normal, like any leveling system it gets harder near the end. This increase has nothing to do with the Warzone battle pass Tier Sale, but rather just the natural progression of every XP based system.

Other fans acknowledge the possibility that this is occurring. Activision did implement a similar system in Destiny, so throttling the XP amount is well within the realm of possibility. There is tons of fan discussion on a previous post that pointed out a similar theory. Overall, most fans believe that if it does exist at all it is most likely unintentional and a glitch in the battle pass system.

The battle pass formula has had several seasons in multiple games to work out. After selling the initial pass, it would make sense to try to slow progression for a higher chance to sell tiers but the risk does not match the reward. By simply selling the battle pass Activision makes money and gives the incentive to continue playing. Selling operator bundles would be debatably more profitable than any number of battle pass tiers.
