It has been highly rumored that the next Call of Duty game will be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The 2019 entry in the popular first-person shooter series is expected to feature a single-player campaign after Black Ops 4 decided to ditch the mode. However, while Modern Warfare 4 may gain one type of content, it may decide to drop another.

That's according to a new report, with anonymous sources saying that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will not feature a Zombies game mode. Developer Infinity Ward will replace the Zombies mode with something else, potentially an expansion of the Survival mode first introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. While the sources didn't provide any information on what this revamped Survival mode may look like, it has been speculated that the mode will address the "barebones" content offered in the Modern Warfare 3 version.

Some may be surprised by this report, as Zombies - both the mode and the characters - have been such a big part of the Call of Duty series' success. For the Zombies narrative content, Call of Duty developers have enlisted high-profile Hollywood actors like Jurassic Park's Jeff Goldblum and Hellboy's Ron Perlman, with players having heaped praise on the mode, loving its tense, co-operative gameplay, its maps, and its Easter eggs.

Zombies are so popular that they have also featured in other Call of Duty game modes. For instance, players can run into Zombies in some parts of the map in Blackout, the battle royale mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. One could even argue that the inclusion of Zombies was one of the most-talked-about parts of Blackout prior to the game's release.

The decision to ditch Zombies from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 would be the very first time the mode hasn't been featured in a Call of Duty game since 2014. Some would argue that they've become as much of a staple as Call of Duty's traditional multiplayer. So, while Infinity Ward may be dropping the mode to do something more innovative with the series, it may not go down well with all players.

Some may also wonder just what content will be included in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 besides the single-player campaign and the Survival mode. A previous report suggested that the game could ditch the Blackout battle royale mode too, and on paper, it makes the game's content sound lacking.

As with any report the cites anonymous sources, it's important to take this information with a grain of salt. Until Infinity Ward or publisher Activision confirms it, both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and its game modes will remain just a rumor.
