  • An upcoming update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on PlayStation will apparently change the game's name to Call of Duty, leaving out the Modern Warfare 3 part.

  • The update will be less than 1 GB and not as large as previously thought.

An upcoming update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on PlayStation, update 1.33 on PS4 and 01.033.000 on PS5, will apparently have the unusual effect of changing the name of the game to Call of Duty, removing the Modern Warfare 3 part of the title. This update has not been yet been officially announced, and it is not yet clear whether a similar change will be made on other platforms.

This update will be the newest in a series of updates and patches the game has received in the days since its November 10 release. As is common among recent AAA titles, Modern Warfare 3 received an extensive day one patch right out of the gate, and has been updated multiple times since in response to issues and player feedback.

While no official announcement has been made about update 1.33/01.033.000, the file has been added to the PlayStation database, according to the PlayStation Game Size Twitter account. The update appears set to change the name of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 app to simply Call of Duty, and nothing else. Many Twitter users responded to the revelation with confusion and annoyance, questioning why the developers are pushing updates for seemingly arbitrary name switches while there are still unaddressed UI errors in Modern Warfare 3 that players want to see fixed.

The announcement also caused some confusion among readers surrounding the update's file size. The post from PlayStation Game Size listed the new total download size for Modern Warfare 3 after the update, which is around 55 GB on PS4 and 108 GB on PS5. Many readers misunderstood this as the size of the update itself, suggesting that players would have to download a 108 GB update just to change the name of the game. This would not be the first time players were forced to download a massive Modern Warfare 3 update in recent days, but fortunately this update will not repeat that frustration: comparing the new file size to that of the previous version reveals that this update will be less than 1 GB on both platforms.

It is not yet clear why the developers of Modern Warfare 3 have decided to change the app name on PlayStation, nor has it been revealed whether the change will be repeated on Xbox or PC. In the midst of a rocky launch, which has seen disgruntled fans review bomb Modern Warfare 3 to express their dissatisfaction with the title, this strange update seems unlikely to improve players' attitudes.
