First Trial: The Staircases of Geunier

Misfit of Demon King Academy Season II Episode 4 review Anos and Jiste

The group continues on their quest to meet with the Spirit King as they begin the next round of tasks, which will require them to split up and pick a staircase, hoping to reach the top of Eniyunien where their target lies. With twenty options with five potential success stories, it seems to be a simple luck of the draw; however, Anos Voldigoad has a few tricks to enhance their chances. Turning all his subordinates into doppelgängers, Team Anos relies on the telltale signs left by their Sources to lead the way, with Lay, Misa, and the true Demon King of Tyranny finding success. Lena follows her instincts and locates a secret passageway leading her straight to Anos, and, as teams of two, they ascend the staircases.

Anos and Lena emerge from the passageway into a familiar field of flowers (last seen during a flashback between The Great Spirit Leno and Shin Reglia), where they bump into an unexpected ally. Jiste (who is but one part of The King of Curses' split personality) beseeches Anos' assistance, as the Hidden Wolf Gennul has taken her counterpart, Kyhilam, captive. She goes on further to explain that neither the King of Curses nor the King of the Underworld, Eges Code, are voluntarily opposing Anos, nor was Lord Gerad (who attacked Misa at the Academy in Season II, episode 1); The Spirit King has been bullying them into doing his dirty work all along.

A Lovers' Quarrel

Misfit of Demon King Academy Season II Episode 4 review Misa, Lay and The Spirit King aka Avos Dilhevia

Meanwhile, Misa and Lay come face-to-face with the Hidden Wolf Gennul, but surprisingly, the colossal beast lets them through to meet with the Spirit King without any hassle. As it turns out, the mysterious enemy is actually a familiar foe in the form of Avos Dilhevia, who won't divulge any information without putting up a fight first; however, if Lay manages to split Avos Dihevia's mask in two, the questioning may commence. To make life harder, Lay is only allowed to use one of the Spirit weapons before him, but thankfully, the Treasured Sword Ailearrow accepts him as its wielder.

Those who meet Ailearrow's blade will instantaneously get turned into a gemstone at Lay's command, but even that is not enough to take Avos down without a fight. Things get a little hairy and so Misa jumps in to assist as Lay's second Spirit Sword, making a miraculous transformation in the process. After revealing her "true form" of an icy Magic Girl, the couple makes quick work of Avos' mask, with the Power of Love now fueling their assault (and a Teo Aske / Teo Trearos combo move.) Although Lay is technically victorious, he is still in grave danger, which compells Misa to use herself as a human shield, and is subsequently plowed through with Avos' blade.

Trial Two: The Hidden Wolf

Misfit of Demon King Academy Season II Episode 4 review The Netherworld King Eges Code, The Hidden Wolf Gennul and Anos Voldigoad

Anos Voldigoad and Lena's run-in with the Hidden Wolf Gennul is less fortunate, as the Spirit of Vanishment challenges the Demon King of Tyranny to an intense game of tag. As luck would have it, Anos won't have to fight alone, seeing as Eges will happily assist by taking responsibility for tracking down the lost souls while Anos continues towards the Spirit King. But first, the Wolf. Anos encapsulates Lena in a shield as Gennul becomes an invisible electrified force, seemingly impossible to capture; even Riga Shrade and Beno Ievun have little effect. Remarkably, Lena suddenly disappears after a flash of light, leading Anos to believe that one must close their eyes if one wishes to see the Hidden Wolf; with his secret revealed, the game is over in an instant.

Before the Demon King of Tyranny can make the Spirit King's acquaintance, the pesky Gilisiris Dello gets in the way again, refusing to admit defeat after their first stand-off. Yet again, the pair are unable to utilize their full paranormal potency; this time around, their magical capacities are limited to whatever they can draw from the surrounding crystalline monuments. Believing himself to have the upper hand, Scarlet Monument King is quick to call upon the Ancient Literary Magic Lehg Noavs; however, little does he know, this ancient spell focuses on efficiency and therefore runs out of steam relatively fast. After biding his time, Anos deals the final blow with the Source-destroying Ji Noavs, leaving the path towards the Spirit King unobstructed.

Plot Twist!

Misfit of Demon King Academy Season II Episode 4 review Avos Dilhevia aka Misa and the Seven Demon Elders

Don't forget to watch the game-changing end-credit scene, which delivers the mindblowing identity of Avos Dilhevia, who is none other than the sweet-and-innocent manic pixie Misa. Dilhade is apparently still under the false Demon King's authority, supported by all Seven Elder Demon Emperors (Melhuis included, who was previously instructed to remain out of sight); however, whether their devotion is voluntary or not is debatable, considering past brainwashing events.

With so many questions left in the air, heads reel as they try to come to terms with this new power dynamic, as the war against Humans is initiated once again, while nobody is quite sure which team Lay will fight on from now onwards. Strangely enough, Misa's proposal necklace went through a transformation of its own when her second icy form was revealed; could their matching jewelry carry a greater significance than an innocent promise of love?
