When people think of horror as a genre, the last thing on their mind would be something like Minecraft. In fact, along with Skyrim and No Man's Sky, the Mojang/Microsoft open world IP is considered one of the best games to induce mindfulness in players. Its peaceful music and vibrant graphics put it far away from anything scary. True, there are moments of danger within the game, but most probably wouldn't consider it scary. However, something spooky does appear to be on the way.

In a recent Minecraft trailer, which is promoting the upcoming The Wild update that's due out today, there does appear to be some horror elements that will be rolling out along with the new major patch. In the video, a couple of miners are seen running through a dark area of some description, with a chicken in tow. Suddenly, the floor cracks and out pops a Warden. The description on YouTube says that this represents a new biome for the game, called the "deep dark."

Okay, so maybe it's not pants-destroyingly terrifying, but it does seem as though there's an attempt to add something a little different to the game. There are already a number of Minecraft mods that do make the game scarier, such as by making caves even darker, adding the legendary Herobrine figure in as a supernatural being, or by introducing some of the horror genre's most notorious movie monsters and villains. However, this latest addition will seemingly be a new biome entirely, and seeks to implement a slightly more spooky experience for those fans that are interested, or at least curious.

On top of that, the way fans buy the game is going to be changing. Recently, it was announced that Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions would be merging, and both will be available under one purchase, at least on PC. The idea behind this is so that players won't have to make a choice, and it will enable cross-play between those that use either build. Anyone who has already purchased one version will be entitled to receive the other for free.

Minecraft's The Wild update, the new biome, and the merging of the Java and Bedrock builds will all be going ahead today. There's a lot to look forward to when it begins to roll out, and with the studio continuing to change things up and add new ideas, it's hardly surprising that it's become one of the most successful video games in history.

Minecraft is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The Wild Update releases June 7.
