With the power of the mace standing out from the traditional swords and the often frustratingly rare trident, there's an obvious learning curve when using this weapon compared to the competition. As the 1.21 update draws closer, with seemingly no other new additions beyond technical changes, knowing the mace's key aspects and functions is important for players waiting for the trial chambers to finally debut.

5 Avoiding All Fall Damage

A High-Risk, High-Reward Type Of Weapon

Minecraft Potion Slow Falling

One of the most unique qualities of the mace is how its offensive prowess ties directly into the player's accuracy. Unlike all other weapons, the mace offers an incredible, if dangerous, power; as long as the player hits a mob, all fall damage will be negated. Since the damage output of the mace increases exponentially when falling from tremendous heights, making full use of this new weapon is risky.

Whether for maximum damage or to simply survive a fall, this playstyle for the mace offers a high-risk, high-reward situation for all kinds of players. The ability to completely negate fall damage, perhaps the most common cause of death for players in Minecraft, is incredible. With the requirement to avoid this damage entirely depending on the player's skill, the mace is a weapon that needs to be mastered.

4 Limitless Damage

The Damage Output Is Intentionally Uncapped

Easily the most important factor with the mace is that the damage it deals is uncapped. Whatever height a player falls from translates to damage dealt, enough to instantly kill the wither, the warden, the ender dragon, and all other mobs in between. While a greater height can make it trickier for players to actually land the damage, the concept of a weapon that can do such a large amount makes for a truly fascinating inclusion in the world of Minecraft.

Although functionality with the elytra has been confirmed to be a bug and will almost certainly be removed, the application of using the mace in survival is still straightforward thanks to its synergy with another new item from the trial chambers, the wind charge. Properly timing a wind charge, if not chaining it off sheer surfaces, can quickly turn the mace into a one-shot weapon even on flat ground.

3 Powerful Combinations

Great To Use With The Trident

Beyond jumping off tall areas and using wind charges, the trident pairs well with this new weapon, as both a way to quickly damage and as a means for getting height. While more limited with its movement capabilities than pillaring up with blocks or the wind charge, the trident, while a rare choice, can prove to be even more useful if players have access to a mace.

Players can't go wrong with these enchantments for their ranged weapons in Minecraft.

Although actually obtaining a trident, in Java edition at least, is no easy feat in and of itself, having one enchanted with riptide can easily propel players high into the air, with the only caveat being the need for water to do so. If it's raining, a player can basically fly with a trident as long as the storm lasts. Between giving players the height needed to deal great damage with the mace, the combination of both of these rare weapons can be devastating.

2 The Point Of The Wind Charge

Allows For A Handy One-Two Combo

Minecraft Wind Charge Duel

The true other half of the mace, the wind charge, is clearly meant to be the perfect item used in combination with this heavy-hitter. Both tools are made from drops by a new mob, both are themed the exact same, and both are perfectly synergized together.

Minecraft has one of gaming's most well-known bestiaries, but it's inarguable that some of its mobs prove to be better than others

As the wind charge is made through crafting by using breeze rods, and one of the two ingredients for a mace is a breeze rod, the way both the mace and charge play off each other is perfect. With the wind charge being a simple and generally safe way to propel into the air, as no fall damage is dealt as long as the player lands on the same Y level, using both can lead to powerful results.

1 A Trial Chamber Exclusive

Found Nowhere Else

Minecraft Trial Chambers Copper Grid

The most important thing to understand about the mace is that it can only be made by using items from the trial chambers. One component of its crafting recipe is a drop from a common mob within the chambers, while the other part of its construction is a rare loot spawn from the trial chamber's unique answer to chests.

While breeze rods can easily be found by slaying the endless number of breezes, the heavy core is a bit more of a challenge. With a 2% drop rate from vaults, it can take quite a lot of keys to actually find one, making it a slower process than the usual sword recipe. The mace may not be as annoying to obtain as a trident, which is even more based on luck and circumstance, but it doesn't mean it's easy to obtain, either.
