Perfectly illustrating just how long Mojang Studios’ Minecraft has been entertaining players, one gamer has shared a screenshot of their collection of in-game animals that date back to the game’s first full release. The unique menagerie makes for an interesting digital time capsule, showing how some things have stayed the same in the game even as it has continued to evolve through the many different versions of Minecraft released over the years.

Long before becoming a global gaming phenomenon capturing the attention of young and old players alike, Minecraft began life as an early access title in 2009. Following the release of the first full version of the game on PC in 2011, Minecraft has gone on to make appearances on multiple consoles and even mobile phones. The unexpectedly long lifespan of Mojang’s block-based sandbox title has led to some in-game collections and projects taking shape over a decade or more. These range from the impressive Minecraft Middle-Earth project, which was founded in 2010, to this unusual collection of in-game animal companions.

While it may not be as labor-intensive as rebuilding the setting of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy tales, one Minecraft fan recently showed off their own in-game accomplishment over a decade in the making. In a new post on r/Minecraft, Redditor ChillZedd shared a picture of their collection of animals that they’ve had penned away in the game since 2011. Dubbed “The Primordial Soup” by the sign in the screenshot, the 12-year-old menagerie features several Minecraft sheep, cows, and pigs standing inside a small pond inside the world. With no way to escape captivity, the animals have been calmly passing their digital days in the same spot for over a decade.

Redditors responding to the post were impressed by the glimpse into Minecraft’s past, with one respondent stating that they struggle to keep their world running for just a few years, never mind 12. Another reply put the age of ChillZedd’s collection into perspective, pointing out that the animals on display were likely older than many Minecraft fans. This led to several replies from older gamers sharing stories of having younger Minecraft players expressing amazement at how long they’d been playing. Rather than waxing nostalgic over Minecraft’s past one Redditor joked about the animals’ watery home, quipping that they “think it’s done stewing.”

Even if it may not be as epic in scale as some of the other multi-year projects players have dedicated themselves to in Minecraft, ChillZedd’s animal collection is still a fun way to pay tribute to the game’s long history. Whether the watery pen would have been able to contain the massive Minecraft cat recently found by another player, though, remains to be seen.

Minecraft is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and legacy platforms.
