As of late, there have been plenty of video game properties that have been announced as receiving theatrical adaptations, with Mojang and Microsoft Studios' Minecraft set to be one of them. As a matter of fact, the companies have now decided to provide fans of the sandbox construction and survival title with a release date for the film based on the game, with the Minecraft movie now scheduled to debut on March 4, 2022, which runs contrary to the May 2019 release date that had been shared several years prior.

Despite the fact that the release date is quite a long time away from now, it seems as if Mojang and Microsoft Studios wanted to ensure that the movie's still in the works and prime Minecraft fans for the day on which it is set to be released to the general public. What's more is that the companies have announced that the feature length film is going to be live-action, with Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist) now attached to direct following the Minecraft movie's previous director Shawn Levy leaving the project.

In addition to the Minecraft movie having a confirmed release date and director, Mojang and Microsoft Studios have also revealed that the overarching plot for the film has been established as well. According to an announcement made by the companies, the Minecraft movie will tell the story of a teenage girl and "her unlikely group of adventurers", who are tasked with saving their blocky Overworld after the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction.

As of now, there's no telling exactly who will make up the cast of the forthcoming Minecraft movie, but there has been some speculation in the past in regards to certain actors rumored to be attached to the project. For instance, it was reported a couple of years back that the Minecraft movie could feature Steve Carell (Foxcatcher, The Big Short, TV's The Office) in some capacity, but that is still unclear at this point in time.

All things considered, with the Minecraft movie now having been confirmed as releasing in 2022, it's safe to say that there's still plenty of time for the film's production team to square away all of the project's details and ensure it hits its debut date. Until then, video game fans excited for more big screen adaptations of titles from the gaming medium have motion pictures such as the Detective Pikachu movie to look forward to in the near future.

The Minecraft movie is set to debut on March 4, 2022.
